1219 AN ACT ALLOWING MEDI CAL ASSISTANTS TO AD MINISTER
1320 VACCINES.
1421 Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General
1522 Assembly convened:

1724 Section 1. (NEW) (Effective October 1, 2021) (a) For purposes of this 1
1825 section, "medical assistant" means a person who (1) (A) is certified by 2
1926 the American Association of Medical Assistants, the National 3
2027 Healthcareer Association, the National Center for Competency Testing 4
2128 or the American Medical Technologists, and (B) has graduated from a 5
2229 postsecondary medical assisting program (i) accredited by the 6
2330 Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs, the 7
2431 Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools or another accrediting 8
2532 organization recognized by the United States Department of Education, 9
2633 or (ii) offered by an institution of higher education accredited by an 10
2734 accrediting organization recognized by the United States Department of 11
2835 Education, or (2) has completed relevant medical assistant training 12
2936 provided by any branch of the armed forces of the United States. 13
3037 (b) A medical assistant may administer a vaccine under the 14

47+administering a vaccine, a medical assistant shall complete not less than 19
4248 twenty-four hours of classroom training and not less than eight hours of 20
4349 training in a clinical setting regarding the administration of vaccines. 21
4450 Nothing in this section shall be construed to permit an employer of a 22
4551 physician or an advanced practice registered nurse to require the 23
4652 physician or advanced practice registered nurse to oversee a medical 24
4753 assistant in the administration of a vaccine without the consent of the 25
4854 physician or advanced practice registered nurse. 26
4955 (c) On or before January first annually, the Commissioner of Public 27
5056 Health shall obtain from the American Association of Medical 28
5157 Assistants, the National Healthcareer Association, the National Center 29
5258 for Competency Testing and the American Medical Technologists a 30
53-listing of all state residents maintained on said organizations' registries 31
54-of certified medical assistants. The commissioner shall make such 32
55-listings available for public inspection. 33
