AN ACT PROHIBITING THE DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES
FROM DISCOURAGING LEGAL REPRESENTATION OF APPLICANTS
AND BENEFICIARIES AND FROM ENGAGING IN UNAUTHORIZED
PRACTICE OF THE LAW.
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General
Assembly convened:
That title 17b of the general statutes be amended to prohibit the 1
Department of Social Services from (1) discouraging public assistance 2
applicants and beneficiaries from obtaining legal representation, and (2) 3
allowing department staff to engage in unauthorized practice of the law. 4
Statement of Purpose:
To ensure adequate legal representation for applicants and beneficiaries
of assistance programs administered by the Department of Social
Services.
