McDuffie 10 11 12 13 14 A BILL 15 16 __________ 17 18 19 IN THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA 20 21 __________________ 22 23 To amend the Burial Assistance Program Reestablishment Act of 1999 to increase the amount of 24 burial assistance offered through the Department of Human Services burial assistance 25 program. 26 27 BE IT ENACTED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, That this 28 act may be cited as the “Burial Assistance Program Increase Amendment Act of 2024”. 29 Sec. 2. Section 1802(a) of the Burial Assistance Program Reestablishment Act of 1999, 30 effective October 20, 1999 (DC Law 13-38; DC Official Code § 4-1001(a)), is amended by 31 striking the phrase “up to a maximum of $1,000 is available for burial and cremation services if 32 the liquid assets of the deceased person at the time of death do not exceed $1,000 and inserting 33 the phrase “up to a maximum of $1800 is available for burial and cremation services if the liquid 34 assets of the deceased person at the time of death do not exceed $1800” in its place. 35 Sec. 3. Fiscal impact statement. 36 2 The Council adopts the fiscal impact statement in the committee report as the fiscal 37 impact statement required by section 4a of the General Legislative Procedures Act of 1975, 38 approved October 16, 2006 (120 Stat. 2038; D. C. Official Code § 1-301.47a). 39 Sec. 4. Effective date. 40 This act shall take effect following approval by the Mayor (or in the event of veto by the 41 Mayor, action by the Council to override the veto), a 30-day period of congressional review as 42 provided in section 602(c)(1) of the District of Columbia Home Rule Act, approved December 43 24, 1973 (87 Stat. 813; D.C. Official Code § 1-206.02(c)(1)), and publication in the district of 44 Columbia Register. 45
