1515 To amend section § 47-850 of the District of Columbia Official Code to provide that a surviving 1

1919 BE IT ENACTED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, That this 5
2020 act may be cited as the “Spousal Homestead Exemption Amendment Act of 2024”. 6
2121 Sec. 2. Section § 47-850 of the District of Columbia Official Code is amended as follows: 7
2222 (a) A new paragraph 4 is added to read as follows: 8
2323 “(4) For the purposes of this subsection, the term “eligible spouse” means the 9
2424 surviving spouse or domestic partner of a veteran who was receiving the benefits provided under 10
2525 this section prior to passing or who would have been eligible for the benefits prior to passing.”. 11
2626 (b) Strike the word “veteran” wherever it appears and insert the phrase “veteran or 12
2727 eligible spouse” in its place. 13
2828 Sec. 3. Applicability. 14
2929 This act shall apply as of October 1, 2022. 15
3030 Sec 4. Fiscal impact statement. 16
3131 The Council adopts the fiscal impact statement of the Budget Director as the fiscal impact 17
3232 statement required by section 4a of the General Legislative Procedures Act of 1975, approved 18
3333 October 16, 2006 (120 Stat. 2038; D.C. Official Code § 1-301.47a). 19 2
3434 Sec. 5. Effective date. 20
3535 This act shall take effect following approval by the Mayor (or in the event of veto by the Mayor, 21
3636 action by the Council to override the veto) and a 30-day period of congressional review as 22
3737 provided in section 602(c)(1) of the District of Columbia Home Rule Act, approved December 23
3838 24, 1973 (87 Stat. 813; D.C. Official Code § 1). 24
