13-To honor the career and accomplishments of retiring news anchor, Doreen Gentzler, and to
14-highlight the impact that her works have had on journalism in the District of Columbia .

16-WHEREAS, Doreen Gentzler was raised in Arlington, Virginia and became a household
17-name i n local cable television;
18- WHEREAS, Gentzler began her career working in newsrooms across the country,
19-including in Charlotte, North Carolina; Chattanooga, Tennessee; Cleveland, Ohio, and Philadelphia Pennsylvania;
20- WHEREAS, Gentzler joined NBC4 Washington in 1989, where she served for more than
21-3 decades as co-anchor for one of Washington’s most popular local TV newscasts alongside
22-local TV news legend, Jim Vance;
23- WHEREAS, during their time working together, Vance and Gentzler drew in more
24-viewers in the Washington region than major networks such as CNN and Fox combined;
25- WHEREAS, t hroughout her career, Gent zler reported extensively both locally and
26-overseas in places such as Bosnia, Ecuador, and the USNS Comfort Hospital Ship;
27- WHEREAS, Gentzler served as the primary local health and medical reporter and was
28-often lauded for clearly and concisely conveying lifesaving information to viewers ;
29- WHEREAS, Gentzler’s impact on the community and her colleagues is evident in the
30-outpouring of support that she has received since the announcement of her retirement;
31- WHEREAS, Gentzler was known for her ability to connect local issues in the
32-Washington region to a larger national story, thus bringing the District into the spotlight; and;

38-WHEREAS, Gentzler leaves behind a legacy of empathy for those whose stories she told,
39-and integrity in sourcing the best information for her audience.

41-RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, That this
42-resolution may be cited as the “Doreen Gentzler Recognition Resolution of 2023” .

44-Sec. 2. The Council of the District of Columbia recognizes the impact that Doreen
45-Gentzler has had on the District of Columbia, and her colleagues, in her 3 decades of service in
46-journalism.

48-Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately.
