To recognize and congratulate Coach Desmond Dunham for being named the 2022 26
National Coach of the Year by the US Track & Field and Cross-Country Coaches Association. 27
WHEREAS, Coach Desmond Dunham is an author and youth sports expert with over two 28
decades of coaching and teaching experience; 29
WHEREAS, Coach Desmond Dunham has successfully coached youth athletes and teams 30
in cross-country, track & field, basketball, soccer, baseball, and flag football; 31
WHEREAS, Coach Desmond Dunham has captured 19 indoor and outdoor national relay 32
championship titles from the 4 x 200m relay to the distance medley relay and snagged a national 33
runner-up finish in the 4 x 1600m relay; 34
WHEREAS, Coach Desmond Dunham joined the St. John’s College High School staff in 35
2017 as the Director and Head Coach of track & field and cross-country and has claimed a total of 36
24 track & field and cross-country championships for the Cadets in his 5-year tenure; 37
WHEREAS, prior to joining St. John’s College High School, Coach Desmond Dunham 38
coached at Eleanor Roosevelt High School, Wilson High School (now Jackson-Reed High 39
School), and the University of Maryland; 40 WHEREAS, in 2019, Coach Desmond Dunham was named the National Federation of 41
State High School Associations (NFHS) Girls National Coach of the Year and was selected as an 42
Under Armour Coach Ambassador; 43
WHEREAS, Coach Desmond Dunham has been nominated as a Brooks Inspiring Coach 44
and The Washington Post All-Met Coach of the Year; 45
WHEREAS, Coach Desmond Dunham was named 2022 National Coach of the Year by 46
the US Track & Field and Cross-Country Coaches Association; 47
WHEREAS, Coach Desmond Dunham is one of the most decorated high school coaches 48
in the country and boasts national All-Americans, national championships, and international titles 49
from the short sprints up to the distance events, including cross country; 50
WHEREAS, Coach Desmond Dunham is the author of Running Against The Odds and the 51
founder of Kids Elite Sports, LLC which provides high quality developmental sports, fitness, and 52
enrichment camps and programs that empower children to live healthy and active lifestyles; 53
WHEREAS, Coach Desmond Dunham earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise 54
Physiology from Howard University and a Master’s in Education (Secondary Science) from 55
Trinity University; 56
WHEREAS, Coach Desmond Dunham has been a teacher and community leader in the 57
District of Columbia for more than 2 decades; and 58
WHEREAS, Coach Desmond Dunham resides in Washington, DC with his wife Jami and 59
their two children, Niles and Nia. 60
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBI A, That this 61
resolution may be cited as the “Coach Desmond Dunham 2022 National Coach of the Year 62
Recognition Resolution of 2023”. 63
Sec. 2. The Council of the District of Columbia recognizes and congratulates Coach 64
Desmond Dunham for being named the 2022 National Coach of the Year by the US Track & Field 65
and Cross-Country Coaches Association. 66
Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon the first date of publication in 67
the District of Columbia Register. 68
