14-To recognize and congratulate Coach Desmond Dunham for being named the 2022
15-National Coach of the Year by the US Track & Field and Cross -Country Coaches Association.
16-WHEREAS, Coach Desmond Dunham is an author and youth sports expert with over 2
17-decades of coaching and teaching experience;
18-WHEREAS, Coach Desmond Dunham has successfully coached youth athletes and teams
19-in cross-country, track & field, basketball, soccer, baseball, and flag football;
20-WHEREAS, Coach Desmond Dunham has captured 19 indoor and outdoor national relay
21-championship titles from the 4 x 200m relay to the distance medley relay and snagged a national runner-up finish in the 4 x 1600m relay;
22-WHEREAS, Coach Desmond Dunham joined the St. John’s College High School staff in
23-2017 as the Director and Head Coach of track & field and cross-country and has claimed a total of
24-24 track & field and cross-country championships for the Cadets in his 5- year tenure;
25-WHEREAS, prior to joining St. John’s College High School, Coach Desmond Dunham
26-coached at Eleanor Roosevelt High School, Wilson High School (now Jackson- Reed High
27-School), and the University of Maryland;
28-WHEREAS, in 2019, Coach Desmond Dunham was named the National Federation of
29-State High School Associations (NFHS) Girls National Coach of the Year and was selected as an
30-Under Armour Coach Ambassador ;
31-WHEREAS, Coach Desmond Dunham has been nominated as a Brooks Inspiring Coach
32-and The Washington Post All-Met Coach of the Year;
33-WHEREAS, Coach Desmond Dunham was named 2022 National Coach of the Year by

38-WHEREAS, Coach Desmond Dunham is one of the most decorated high school coaches
39-in the country and boasts national All-Americans, national championships, and international titles
40-from the short sprints up to the distance events, including cross country;
41-WHEREAS, Coach Desmond Dunham is the author of Running Against The Odds and the
42-founder of Kids Elite Sports, LLC which provides high quality developmental sports, fitness, and
43-enrichment camps and programs that empower children to live healthy and active lifestyles;
44-WHEREAS, Coach Desmond Dunham earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise
45-Physiology from Howard University and a Master’s in Education (Secondary Science) from
46-Trinity University;
47-WHEREAS, Coach Desmond Dunham has been a teacher and community leader in the
48-District of Columbia for more than 2 decades; and
49-WHEREAS, Coach Desmond Dunham resides in Washington, DC with his wife Jami and
50-their two children, Niles and Nia.
51-RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, T hat this
52-resolution may be cited as the “Coach Desmond Dunham 2022 National Coach of the Year
53-Recognition Resolution of 2023”.
54-Sec. 2. The Council of the District of Columbia recognizes and congratulates Coach
55-Desmond Dunham for being named the 2022 National Coach of the Year by the US Track & Field
56-and Cross-Country Coaches Association.
57-Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately.
