41+To recognize the month of June 2023 as “Gun Violence Awareness Month” in the District 39

43+WHEREAS, Hadiya Pendleton, a teenager from Chicago who marched in the presidential 41

21-WHEREAS, to help honor Hadiya and to raise awareness of the epidemic of gun violence
22-in the United States, a national coalition of organizations has designated June 2, 2023 as
23-National Gun Violence Awareness Day and the month of June as Gun Violence Awareness
24-Month;
25-WHEREAS, there are an average of nearly 60 gun homicides across the country each
26-day, and nearly 100 Americans are harmed by guns e very day;
27-WHEREAS, in the District of Columbia in 2022, 174 people were ki lled by gunfire and
28-710 more were injured;
29-WHEREAS, in the District of Columbia in 2022, 16 children were killed by gunfire and
30-89 more were injured;
31-WHEREAS, t he Council encourages all District residents to look for ways to support
32-their local communities’ efforts to prevent the tragic effects of gun violence and honor and
33-value precious human life.

35-RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, That this
36-resolution may be cited as the “Gun Violence Awareness Month Recognition Resolution of
37-2023.”
38-Sec. 2. The Council declares the month of June 2023 as “Gun Violence Awareness
39-Month” in the District of Columbia.
40-Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately.

66+Month” in the District of Columbia. 61
67+Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon the first date of publication in 62
68+the District of Columbia Register. 63
