16- in 1987, the Women’s Sports Foundation held the first National Girls and
17-Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) to commemorate the Olympic volleyball player Flo Hyman for
18-her athletic achievements and dedication to promoting equality in women’s sports;
19-WHEREAS, the Women’s Sports Foundation was established in 1974 to advance the
20-lives of women and girls through sports and physical activity;

24+WHEREAS, in 1987, the Women’s Sports Foundation held the first National Girls and 24

32-Women’s Sports Hall of Fame to honor history- making female athletes and coaches and to
33-solidify the reputation of female athletics worldwide;

47-nonprofit LGBTQ+ athlete advocacy group, and over 60 elite athletes globally, join in opposition
48-to the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF)’s eligibility regulations for
49-female track athletes;
50-WHEREAS, in 1997, the Women’s Sports Foundation publishes The Women’s Sports
51-Foundation Gender Equity Report Card, examining more than 700 National College Athletic
52-Association (NCAA) universities for compliance with Title IX;

54-Teen Athlete, providing evidence that participating in sport fundamentally reduces common

71-RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, That this
72-resolution may be cited as the “National Girls & Women in Sports Day Ceremonial Recognition
73-Resolution of 2024”.
74-Sec. 2. The Council acknowledges National Girls & Women in Sports Day in the District of
75-Columbia as a tribute to celebrate and honor the remarkable contributions women have made in
76-the field of sports, enriching the world with their significant achievements .
77-Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately.
