ENROLLED ORIGINAL 1 A CEREMONIAL RESOLUTION 25-261 IN THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA October 1, 2024 To celebrate the 125 th anniversary of the National Consumers League and recognize the organization for its contributions to social justice and consumers’ rights nationally and in the District of Columbia. WHEREAS, the National Consumers League (“NCL”) was established in 1899 by the leaders of the social justice movement and its earliest efforts were successfully directed at protecting workers in the workplace, promoting minimum wage legislation, and advocating for the creation of the Children's Bureau and federal child labor restrictions; WHEREAS, the NCL was instrumental in the historic passage of the 1938 Fair Labor Standards Act by Congress that addressed child labor, minimum wage, and industrial homework; WHEREAS, as the NCL continued to advocate for worker protections, it expanded its focus to the areas of Social Security legislation, national health insurance, long- term care, automobile insurance, and drug and food safety legislation; WHEREAS, the NCL is a nonprofit membership organization representing consumers and workers whose members come from every walk of life from senior citizens to teachers, farmers to steelworkers, and nurses to students; WHEREAS, the NCL has been a pioneering consumer organization at the forefront of securing standards of safety and reliability of goods and services for consumers; WHEREAS, the NCL has presented testimony on numerous worker and consumer- oriented legislation to the Council of the District of Columbia; WHEREAS, the NCL’s success is based on its multi-faceted approach building coalitions, mounting public education campaigns and advancing improved legislation and policies. ENROLLED ORIGINAL 2 RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, That this resolution may be cited as the “National Consumers League 125 th Anniversary Recognition Resolution of 2024” . Sec. 2. The Council of the District of Columbia celebrates the 125 th anniversary of the National Consumers League and recognizes the organization for its contributions to social justice and consumers’ rights nationally and in the District of Columbia. Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately.
