1116 To recognize the Chinese community in the District of Columbia for its generous and valued
1217 contributions to the cultural, economic, social, and political life of the city and to honor
1318 the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association for its sponsorship of the parade to
1419 celebrate the Year of the Snake.
1520 WHEREAS, Chinese people have lived in the District of Columbia as a community since
1621 at least 1884, when nearly 100 immigrants settled near 3rd Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W.,
1722 and remained there until 1935, when the settlement moved to its current location along H Street,
1823 N.W., which is commonly known as “Chinatown”;
1924 WHEREAS, Chinatown is a unique cultural and social center for the District, providing
2025 visitors with a taste of Chinese culture;
2126 WHEREAS, today there are more than 40 Chinese businesses and hundreds of Chinese
2227 residents in Chinatown, which serves as the center of health care, dining, and shopping for the
2328 thousands of Chinese residents in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area;
2429 WHEREAS, the District of Columbia’s commitment to the Chinese community continues
2530 as the government strives to improve services for the Chinese community through the
2631 establishment of the Office on Asian and Pacific Islander Affairs, the Metropolitan Police
2732 Department’s Asian Liaison Unit, and the Chinatown Community Cultural Center, which we
2833 salute;
2934 WHEREAS, thousands of District of Columbia residents will gather along I Street and
3035 6th Street, N.W, on Sunday, February 2, 2025 to enjoy the parade and celebrate the Chinese
3136 Lunar New Year;
3237 WHEREAS, the annual anniversary celebration and parade for the Chinese Lunar New
3338 Year, sponsored by the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association, is nationally known as
3439 one of the finest celebrations of color, art, and pageantry; and
3540 WHEREAS, the snake symbolizes wisdom, elegance, intuition, renewal, transformation,

4142 RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, That this
4243 resolution may be cited as the "Chinese Lunar New Year 4723, Year of the Snake Recognition
4344 Resolution of 2025”.
4445 Sec. 2. The Council of the District of Columbia salutes the Chinese community of the
4546 District of Columbia and the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association for their numerous
4647 contributions to the cultural, social, economic, and political life of the city. Further, the Council
4748 thanks the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association and the Parade Committee for
4849 sponsoring the parade to celebrate the Chinese New Year, and declares Wednesday, January 29,
4950 2025, as “Chinese Lunar New Year 4723, Year of the Snake Day” in the District of Columbia.
5051 Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately.
