11	16		To recognize the Chinese community in the District of Columbia for its generous and valued
12	17		contributions to the cultural, economic, social, and political life of the city and to honor
13	18		the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association for its sponsorship of the parade to
14	19		celebrate the Year of the Snake.
15	20		WHEREAS, Chinese people have lived in the District of Columbia as a community since
16	21		at least 1884, when nearly 100 immigrants settled near 3rd Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W.,
17	22		and remained there until 1935, when the settlement moved to its current location along H Street,
18	23		N.W., which is commonly known as “Chinatown”;
19	24		WHEREAS, Chinatown is a unique cultural and social center for the District, providing
20	25		visitors with a taste of Chinese culture;
21	26		WHEREAS, today there are more than 40 Chinese businesses and hundreds of Chinese
22	27		residents in Chinatown, which serves as the center of health care, dining, and shopping for the
23	28		thousands of Chinese residents in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area;
24	29		WHEREAS, the District of Columbia’s commitment to the Chinese community continues
25	30		as the government strives to improve services for the Chinese community through the
26	31		establishment of the Office on Asian and Pacific Islander Affairs, the Metropolitan Police
27	32		Department’s Asian Liaison Unit, and the Chinatown Community Cultural Center, which we
28	33		salute;
29	34		WHEREAS, thousands of District of Columbia residents will gather along I Street and
30	35		6th Street, N.W, on Sunday, February 2, 2025 to enjoy the parade and celebrate the Chinese
31	36		Lunar New Year;
32	37		WHEREAS, the annual anniversary celebration and parade for the Chinese Lunar New
33	38		Year, sponsored by the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association, is nationally known as
34	39		one of the finest celebrations of color, art, and pageantry; and
35	40		WHEREAS, the snake symbolizes wisdom, elegance, intuition, renewal, transformation,

41	42		RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, That this
42	43		resolution may be cited as the "Chinese Lunar New Year 4723, Year of the Snake Recognition
43	44		Resolution of 2025”.
44	45		Sec. 2. The Council of the District of Columbia salutes the Chinese community of the
45	46		District of Columbia and the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association for their numerous
46	47		contributions to the cultural, social, economic, and political life of the city. Further, the Council
47	48		thanks the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association and the Parade Committee for
48	49		sponsoring the parade to celebrate the Chinese New Year, and declares Wednesday, January 29,
49	50		2025, as “Chinese Lunar New Year 4723, Year of the Snake Day” in the District of Columbia.
50	51		Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately.
