3131 To declare the month of March, 2025 as “Problem Gambling Awareness Month” in the District of 29
3232 Columbia and to recognize the importance of raising awareness of problem gambling as a 30
3333 critical public health issue impacting millions of Americans of all ages, races, and ethnic 31
3434 backgrounds. 32

3636 WHEREAS, March is designated as Problem Gambling Awareness Month by the 34
3737 National Council on Problem Gambling; 35
3838 WHEREAS, problem gambling has significant societal and economic costs for 36
3939 indiv ; 37

4141 WHEREAS, the National Council on Problem Gambling estimates that between 12,000 38
4242 and 15,000 District residents are affected by gambling addiction, with limited resources available 39
4343 for those seeking help; 40
4444 WHEREAS, in 2024, the National Problem Gambling Helpline (1-800 GAMBLER) 41
4545 received 5,494 calls, texts, and chats from the District; 42
4646 WHEREAS, indiv suicide, drug or 43
4747 alcohol dependence, and bankruptcy; and 44
4848 WHEREAS, problem gambling is treatable, and effective treatment can significantly 45
4949 reduce harm to both indiv e. 46
5050 RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, That this 47
5151 resolution may be cited as the “Problem Gambling Awareness Month Recognition Resolution of 48
5252 2025.” 49
5353 Sec. 2. The Council of the District of Columbia recognizes the importance of addressing 50
5454 problem gambling as a public health issue and pledges to support efforts to prevent, intervene, 51
5555 and treat problem gambling within the District and declares March, 2025 as “Problem Gambling 52
5656 Awareness Month” in the District of Columbia. 53
5757 Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon the first date of publication in 54
5858 the District of Columbia Register. 55
