Sokola, Wilson HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES 152nd GENERAL ASSEMBLY HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 122 RECOGNIZING SIGNIFICANT HEALTH CONCERNS REGARDING WATER BEAD TOYS. WHEREAS, a nationwide uproar has ensued due to the health and safety risks posed to children and pets by water beads toys; and WHEREAS, water beads are tiny balls made out of polymer material that are often sold in childrens toys ; and WHEREAS, if ingested water beads can grow up to 100x their original size when exposed to water which can cause choking, internal injuries, and death if undetected; and WHEREAS, some of the symptoms of consuming a water bead is vomiting, dehydration, intestinal blockages, and other life-threatening injuries ; and WHEREAS, up to several thousand can be in one toy; and WHEREAS, due to the material it is made of, a dry water bead can fall out of the toy without making a sound, making it more difficult to detect if the toy has opened up; and WHEREAS, water beads toys are specifically marketed towards children from their bright colors and candy shape; and WHEREAS , the Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends that parents and caregivers take away these products from children aged 3 years or younger. Additionally, they advise allowing only supervised play for children older than 3 with these items; and WHEREAS, it is recommended to call the National Poison Help Line at 800-222-1222 if a water bead is consumed by any individual ; and WHEREAS, water beads put children at a risk being sold here in Delaware . NOW, THEREFORE: BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the 152 nd General Assembly of the State of Delaware, the Senate concurring therein, that we hereby encourage parents, childcare centers and preschools to take precautions when allowing their children to play with water bead toys.
