 HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES 

 152nd GENERAL ASSEMBLY 

   

 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 132 

   

 RECOGNIZING MAY 18, 2024, AS "ARMED FORCES DAY". 

   

  WHEREAS,  on August 21, 1949, Secretary of Defense, Louis Johnson, announced the creation of Armed Forces Day stemming from the unification of the Armed Forces under the Department of Defense; and         WHEREAS, the first official Armed Forces Day took place on May 20, 1950, and was themed Teamed for Defense; and   WHEREAS, in 1961, John F. Kennedy declared Armed Forces Day a national holiday to be celebrated on the third Saturday in May in an effort to unite citizens to honor our military heroes, both past and present, for their patriotic service and support of the United States of America; and    WHEREAS, th is day is set aside to honor the determination of our servicemen and women who intercept any threat to the peace of the United States with strength and resolve and know that the survival of freedom requires great cost, commitment, and personal sacrifice.   NOW, THEREFORE:    BE IT RESOLVED  by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring therein, that the General Assembly hereby recognizes May 18, 2024, as Armed Forces Day.
