 HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES 

 152nd GENERAL ASSEMBLY 

   

 HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 28 

   

 RECOGNIZING THE LAST MONDAY OF MAY AS MEMORIAL DAY. 

   

  WHEREAS, on the last Monday of May, the United States of America will observe Memorial Day; and    WHEREAS, this day is set aside every year to honor and remember those who have fallen while serving in the U.S. Military; and    WHEREAS, this holiday, originally known as Decoration Day, began in 1868 as a nationwide day of remembrance, taking place on May 30, to honor soldiers who died while serving in the Civil War; and    WHEREAS, in 1968, the United States Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which created a three-day weekend for federal employees, and declared Memorial Day a federal holiday taking place on the last Monday of May; and    WHEREAS, Memorial Day is traditionally celebrated by paying tribute to fallen soldiers, decorating their graves, reciting prayers, and holding parades in their honor.    NOW THEREFORE:    BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the 152nd General Assembly of the State of Delaware that the last Monday of May is hereby recognized as a day to honor and mourn U.S. Military personnel who sacrificed their lives while protecting the freedoms enjoyed by the citizens of the United States of America.    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the members of the House of Representatives call on all Delawareans to reflect, honor, and celebrate the lives of those who have fallen during their service in the United States Military.
