 DELAWARE STATE SENATE

 152nd GENERAL ASSEMBLY

 SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 125

RECOGNIZING THE MONTH OF MARCH 2024, AS KIDNEY MONTH IN THE STATE OF DELAWARE.

WHEREAS, March is recognized as National Kidney Month, an important opportunity to raise public awareness and understanding of kidney diseases; and WHEREAS, nearly 37 million U.S. adults have chronic kidney disease (CKD), and 90% of those people may not know they have it; and WHEREAS, according to the American Kidney Fund, 2,575 Delaware residents are living with end-stage renal disease. Of these individuals, 1,819 depend on dialysis to stay alive, and 756 have transplants; and WHEREAS, diabetes and high blood pressure are two of the main causes of CKD; and CKD symptoms may not appear until the final stages when patients need dialysis or a kidney transplant; and WHEREAS, symptoms do not present until kidney damage is advanced. When symptoms emerge, they include fatigue, swelling in the legs and feet, and weight gain, among others; and WHEREAS, according to the U.S. Renal Data System Report, only about 1 in 8 Delaware patients on the waiting list got a kidney transplant in 2020, with 389 new cases of kidney failure diagnosed in Delaware in 2018 (the most recent data available). None of these were able to get a transplant and all 389 individuals went on dialysis; and WHEREAS, kidney disease can be treated if it is caught and treated early. Regular physical exams and blood tests can help identify CKD early and then slow or stop the progress of CKD; and WHEREAS, kidney health can be improved by reducing red meat consumption, fast food meals, and sugary drinks while eating more fruits and vegetables and drinking mainly water; and WHEREAS, the Chronic Renal Disease Program (CRDP) was established in 1970 to provide assistance to Delaware residents diagnosed with End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD). The State of Delaware provides 100% of the funding for this program for eligible applicants; the program is administered by the Division of Medicaid & Medical Assistance (DMMA); and WHEREAS, increasing public awareness and understanding of kidney disease could lead to early diagnosis and care for some of the most vulnerable populations and empower and educate those at risk on how they can manage it. NOW, THEREFORE: BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the 152nd General Assembly of the State of Delaware, the House of Representatives concurring therein, that the members of the General Assembly hereby recognize the month of March 2024 as Kidney Month in the State of Delaware.
