2323 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida: 10

2525 Section 1. Paragraph (h) of subsection (2) of section 12
2626 1003.42, Florida Statutes, is amended to read: 13
2727 1003.42 Required instruction. — 14
2828 (2) Members of the instructional staff of the public 15
2929 schools, subject to the rules of the State Board of Education 16
3030 and the district school bo ard, shall teach efficiently and 17
3131 faithfully, using the books and materials required that meet the 18
3232 highest standards for professionalism and historical accuracy, 19
3333 following the prescribed courses of study, and employing 20
3434 approved methods of instruction, the f ollowing: 21
3535 (h) The history of African Americans, including the 22
3636 history of African peoples before the political conflicts that 23
3737 led to the development of slavery, the passage to America, the 24
3838 enslavement experience, abolition, and the contributions of 25

5757 The State Board of Education is encouraged to adopt standards 32
5858 and pursue assessment of the requirements of this subsection. A 33
5959 character development program that incorporates the values of 34
6060 the recipients of the Co ngressional Medal of Honor and that is 35
6161 offered as part of a social studies, English Language Arts, or 36
6262 other schoolwide character building and veteran awareness 37
6363 initiative meets the requirements of paragraphs (s) and (t). 38
6464 Section 2. This act shall take effect July 1, 2022. 39
