HR 8003 2022 CODING: Words stricken are deletions; words underlined are additions. hr8003-00 Page 1 of 2 F L O R I D A H O U S E O F R E P R E S E N T A T I V E S House Resolution 1 A resolution recognizing November 13 -19, 2022, as 2 "Thyroid Eye Disease Awareness Week" in Florida. 3 4 WHEREAS, thyroid eye disease (TED) is a serious, 5 progressive, and rare autoimmune condition in which the body's 6 immune system mistakenly attacks healthy muscle and fat tissue 7 behind the eye, causing inflammation and the formation of scar 8 tissue, and 9 WHEREAS, people living with TED often have debilitating 10 symptoms of eye bulging, double vision, blurred vision, pain, 11 and facial disfigurement and can develop blindness in severe 12 cases, and 13 WHEREAS, people living with TED often experience long -term 14 functional, psychosocial, and economic burdens, including the 15 inability to work or perform daily activities, and 16 WHEREAS, TED is a vision -threatening condition that can 17 worsen over time and, in the general population, is estimated to 18 have a prevalence of 16 per 100,000 women and 2.9 per 100,000 19 men, and 20 WHEREAS, a diagnosis of TED is based upon identification of 21 characteristic symptoms, a detailed patient history, a thorough 22 clinical evaluation, and a variety of specialized tests, and 23 WHEREAS, there is a genetic component to the condition, and 24 people who have a family histor y of TED or a family history of 25 HR 8003 2022 CODING: Words stricken are deletions; words underlined are additions. hr8003-00 Page 2 of 2 F L O R I D A H O U S E O F R E P R E S E N T A T I V E S autoimmune disease are at a greater risk of developing the 26 condition, but the exact underlying process by which TED occurs 27 is not fully understood, NOW, THEREFORE, 28 29 Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the Sta te of 30 Florida: 31 32 That November 13-19, 2022, is recognized as "Thyroid Eye 33 Disease Awareness Week" in Florida. 34
