WHEREAS, the sport of water skiing was invented in 1922 5
when, after 5 days of trial and error, young thrill seeker, 6
Ralph Samuelson, managed to use skis to glide across Minnesota's 7
Lake Pepin, and 8
WHEREAS, water skiing was popularized by Dick Pope, Sr., 9
who filmed newsreels of elaborate water ski shows on Lake Eloise 10
in the Cypress Gardens theme park, catching the attention of 11
Hollywood and leading to the park's feature in the 1953 film 12
"Easy to Love," and 13
WHEREAS, water skiing is part of the water sports industry 14
which contributes to the state's tourism indus try, and 15
WHEREAS, the City of Winter Haven is known as the "Water 16
Ski Capital of the World" and will host the fifth International 17
Waterski and Wakeboard Federation World Water Ski Show 18
Tournament in October 2022, capping off the centennial 19
celebration of water skiing, NOW, THEREFORE, 20
