House Resolution 1 
A resolution designating May 2022 as "Cancer Awareness 2 
Month" in Florida. 3 
 4 
 WHEREAS, in 1979, the Legislature established the Florida 5 
Cancer Control and Research Advisory Council (CCRAB), which 6 
published its first Florida Cancer Plan in 1981, and the CCRAB 7 
continues to address the goals and objectives outlined in the 8 
plan to bring stakeholders together to find a cure, and 9 
 WHEREAS, in 1970, there were 3 million cancer survivors in 10 
the United States, and the 5 -year cancer survival rate was 49 11 
percent, and 12 
 WHEREAS, it is predicted that by the year 2030 there will 13 
be 22.1 million cancer survivors, and the 5 -year cancer survival 14 
rate will be more than 70 percent, and 15 
 WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society estimates that there 16 
are approximately 1.5 million cancer survivors in the state, and 17 
 WHEREAS, each year, more than 120,000 people in the state 18 
are diagnosed with cancer, affecting all 67 co unties, and 19 
 WHEREAS, routine cancer screenings are likely to save 20 
lives, and Floridians are encouraged to undergo cancer 21 
screenings as recommended by their health care providers, NOW, 22
