A resolution recognizing the second Monday in October 2 
2022 as "Indigenous Peoples' Day" in Florida. 3 
 4 
 WHEREAS, Indigenous Peoples' Day is a holiday that 5 
celebrates and honors Native American peoples and commemorates 6 
their histories and cultures, and 7 
 WHEREAS, Indigenous Peoples' Day was first proposed in 1977 8 
by a delegation of Native Nations to the United Nations 9 
International Conference on Discrimination against Indigenous 10 
Populations in the Americas , and 11 
 WHEREAS, while there is no federally recognized holiday, 12 
Indigenous Peoples' Day is celebrated across the United States 13 
on the second Monday of October and is an official city and 14 
state holiday in vario us localities, and 15 
 WHEREAS, before colonization, indigenous peoples lived and 16 
flourished in the Americas for thousands of years , and 17 
 WHEREAS, the European colonization of North America led to 18 
the deaths of millions of native people and the forced 19 
assimilation of survivors, resulting in a loss of many native 20 
cultures, and 21 
 WHEREAS, Florida recognizes and values the vast 22 
contributions made to the state and nation by indigenous peoples 23 
in science, philosophy, arts, and culture, and 24  

 WHEREAS, Florida supports and encourages appropriate 25 
ceremonies and activities to celebrate and promote awareness of 26 
indigenous peoples, NOW, THEREFORE, 27

Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of 29 
Florida: 30 
 31 
 That the second Monday in October 2022 is recogni zed as 32 
"Indigenous Peoples' Day" in Florida. 33
