House Resolution 1 
A resolution designating December 2022 as "Muslim 2 
Heritage Month" in the State of Florida. 3 
 4 
 WHEREAS, Islamic tradition recognizes December as the month 5 
in which the Quran was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad Ibn 6 
Abdulla, and 7 
 WHEREAS, people of diverse races and backgrounds practice 8 
the Islamic faith, including many of the enslaved people brought 9 
to America from Africa, and 10 
 WHEREAS, Islam is the third largest rel igion in the United 11 
States after Christianity and Judaism, with an estimated 3.5 12 
million followers, with Florida having the seventh largest 13 
Muslim population in the country, and 14 
 WHEREAS, Muslims have contributed to the advancement of 15 
human civilization in the fields of science, astronomy, 16 
medicine, mathematics, law, and more, and 17 
 WHEREAS, harassment, assault, and discrimination against 18 
Muslims increased in the wake of the terrorist attacks of 19 
September 11, 2001, and 20 
 WHEREAS, many prominent Muslims, such as Nobel Peace Prize 21 
recipients Tawakel Karman and Malala Yousafzai, have promoted 22 
peace and understanding between all faiths, identities, and 23 
nationalities while upholding the values and principles that 24 
define the American people, NOW, THEREFORE, 25  

Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of 27 
Florida: 28 
 29 
 That December 2022 is designated as "Muslim Heritage Month" 30 
in the State of Florida to celebrate and promote awareness of 31 
the invaluable contributions Muslims have made to the state and 32 
nation. 33
