9494 Section 2. Subsections (1), (3), and (6) of section 57
9595 1009.53, Florida Statutes, are amended to read: 58
9696 1009.53 Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program. — 59
9797 (1) The Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program is 60
9898 created to establish a lottery -funded scholarship program to 61
9999 reward any Florida high school graduate who merits recognition 62
100100 of high academic achievement and who enrolls in a degree 63
101101 program, certificate program, or applied technology program , or 64
102102 apprenticeship program, as defined in s. 446. 021(6), at an 65

105105 (3) The Department of Education shall administer the 68
106106 Bright Futures Scholarship Program according to rules and 69
107107 procedures established by the State Board of Education. A single 70
108108 application must be sufficient for a student to apply for any of 71
109109 the awards. The department shall advertise the availability of 72
110110 the scholarship program and shall notify students, teachers, 73
111111 parents, certified school counselors, and principals or oth er 74
112112 relevant school administrators of the criteria and application 75

148148 hours or the equivalent clock hours in the last academic year in 99

166166 (b) Maintain the cumulative grade point average or the 105
167167 equivalent required by the scholarship program, except that: 106
168168 1. If a recipient's grades fall beneath the average 107
169169 required to renew a Florida Academic Scholarship, but are 108
170170 sufficient to renew a Florida Medallion Scholarship, a Florida 109
171171 Gold Seal CAPE Scholarship, or a Florida Gold Seal Vocational 110
172172 Scholarship, the Department of Education may grant a renewal 111
173173 from one of those other scholarship programs, if the student 112
174174 meets the renewal eligibility requirements; or 113
175175 2. For students initially eligible in the 2010 -2011 114
176176 academic term and thereafter, if at any time during a student's 115
177177 first academic year the student's grades or the equivalent are 116
178178 insufficient to renew the scholarship, the student may restore 117
179179 eligibility by improving the grade point average or the 118
180180 equivalent to the required level. A student is eligible for such 119
181181 a restoration one time. The Legislature encourages education 120
182182 institutions to assist students to calculate whether or not it 121
183183 is possible to raise the grade point average or the equivalent 122
184184 during the summer term. If the education institution determines 123
185185 that it is possible, the institution may so inform the 124
186186 department, which may reserve the student's award if funds are 125

200200 student achieves the requi red cumulative grade point average or 127
201201 the equivalent. If the summer term is not sufficient to raise 128
202202 the grade point average or the equivalent to the required 129
203203 renewal level, the student's next opportunity for renewal is the 130
204204 fall semester of the following ac ademic year. 131
205205 (2) For students initially eligible in the 2010 -2011 132
206206 academic term and thereafter, and unless otherwise provided in 133
207207 this section, if a student does not meet the requirements for 134
208208 renewal of a scholarship because of lack of completion of 135
209209 sufficient credit hours or insufficient grades or the 136
210210 equivalent, the scholarship shall be renewed only if the student 137
211211 failed to complete sufficient credit hours or to meet sufficient 138
212212 grade requirements or the equivalent due to verifiable illness 139
213213 or other documented emergency, in which case the student may be 140
214214 granted an exception from academic requirements pursuant to s. 141
215215 1009.40(1)(b)4. 142
216216 (3)(a) A student who is initially eligible in the 2023-143
217217 2024 2012-2013 academic year and thereafter may receive an award 144
218218 for a maximum of 100 percent of the number of credit hours 145
219219 required to complete an associate degree program, a 146
