House Resolution 1 
A resolution recognizing the Tallahassee -Leon County 2 
Bicentennial and envisioning the powerful next chapter 3 
of Florida's Capital community. 4 
 5 
 WHEREAS, the Tallahassee -Leon County Bicentennial presents 6 
the capital of the third -most populous state in the country an 7 
opportunity to reflect and celebrate 200 years of remarkable 8 
achievements by citizens with drive, determination, and 9 
ambition, and 10 
 WHEREAS, the City of Tallahassee, Leon County, and the 11 
surrounding region have a rich human history dating back 15,000 12 
years, with present-day Tallahassee being the site of the 13 
Indigenous Apalachee capital of Anhaica, and 14 
 WHEREAS, Florida became a U.S. terr itory in 1821, according 15 
to terms of the Adams -Onis Treaty between the United States of 16 
America and Spain, and 17 
 WHEREAS, the City of Tallahassee was chosen to be the seat 18 
of government and Florida's capital for this newly formed 19 
territory on March 4, 1824, because of its scenic beauty and 20 
enchanting cascade, for the agricultural quality of its rich 21 
soils, and because of its strategic geographic position halfway 22 
between the historic ports of St. Augustine and Pensacola, and 23 
 WHEREAS, the boundaries of Leon C ounty were drawn to 24 
encompass the newly designated capital, and the county was 25  

established by the Territorial Legislature that same year on 26 
December 29, 1824, and 27 
 WHEREAS, Florida would later be admitted as the twenty -28 
seventh state in the United States in 1845, with the City of 29 
Tallahassee as its capital, and 30 
 WHEREAS, the Tallahassee -Leon County community has produced 31 
world-renowned authors, artists, and leaders in arts, politics, 32 
mathematics, science, civil rights, and sports, and 33 
 WHEREAS, the City of T allahassee and Leon County are home 34 
to three world-class higher education institutions, Florida 35 
State University, Florida Agricultural and Mechanical 36 
University, and Tallahassee Community College, which 37 
collectively serve approximately 70,000 students each year, and 38 
 WHEREAS, the Tallahassee -Leon County Bicentennial 39 
Commemoration is an opportunity to recognize the impact and 40 
contributions of the rich history, natural beauty, ambition, and 41 
diversity that the City of Tallahassee and Leon County have had 42 
and continue to have on this state, the nation, and the world, 43 
NOW, THEREFORE, 44

Be It Resolved by the Florida House of Representatives of the 46 
State of Florida: 47

 That the Florida House of Representatives recognizes and 49 
extends greetings and best wishes to a ll observing the important 50  

milestone of the Tallahassee -Leon County Bicentennial and 51 
envisions the powerful next chapter of the community. 52 
 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this resolution be 53 
presented to the Mayor of Tallahassee and the Chair of the Leon 54 
County Board of County Commissioners as a tangible token of the 55 
sentiments of the Florida House of Representatives. 56
