House Resolution 1 
A resolution designating May 17, 2024, as "Endangered 2 
Species Day" in Florida. 3 
 4 
 WHEREAS, annually on the third Friday in May, thousands of 5 
people around the world participate in a global day of action 6 
celebrating, learning about, and taking action to protect 7 
endangered species, and 8 
 WHEREAS, wildlife refuges, gardens, schools, libraries, 9 
museums, community groups, nonprofits, and individuals hold 10 
special programs or events highlighting the significance of 11 
protecting endangered species, and 12 
 WHEREAS, endangered species include plants and animals that 13 
are determined to be threatened or endangered and are provided 14 
protections under the United States Endangered Spe cies Act, and 15 
 WHEREAS, there are over 1,300 threatened or endangered 16 
species in the United States, and 17 
 WHEREAS, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation 18 
Commission maintains that endangered species in this state 19 
include the leatherback sea turtle, the ivory-billed woodpecker, 20 
the finback whale, the Florida panther, the humpback whale, the 21 
Key Largo cotton mouse, the sperm whale, and many others, and 22 
 WHEREAS, education about threatened or endangered species, 23 
growing native plants, reducing the use of ou tdoor chemicals, 24  

and protecting wildlife habitats contribute to the protection of 25 
threatened or endangered species, and 26 
 WHEREAS, education and advocacy have protected endangered 27 
species such as the American alligator through conservation 28 
efforts, NOW, THEREFORE, 29 
 30 
Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of 31 
Florida: 32 
 33 
 That May 17, 2024, is designated as "Endangered Species 34 
Day" and Floridians are encouraged to take actions to protect 35 
endangered species. 36
