A resolution recognizing February 27, 2024, as 2 
"Dominican-American Heritage Day" in Florida. 3 
 4 
 WHEREAS, the island of Hispaniola is home to two countries, 5 
with Haiti on the west and the Dominican Republic on the east, 6 
and 7 
 WHEREAS, the people of the Dominican Republic were under 8 
Haitian rule for 22 years before the Dominican War of 9 
Independence set them free in 1844, and 10 
 WHEREAS, migration from the Dominica n Republic to the 11 
United States began in the 1960s in the wake of economic and 12 
political turbulence that occurred after dictator Rafael 13 
Trujillo was killed by rebels, and 14 
 WHEREAS, since 1990, Dominican Americans have comprised the 15 
fourth largest Hispanic immigrant population residing in the 16 
United States, and 17 
 WHEREAS, Florida is the third of the five states with the 18 
largest concentrations of Dominican Americans, with 19 
approximately 12 percent of Dominican Americans residing in this 20 
state, and 21 
 WHEREAS, Dominican Americans have made significant 22 
contributions to the United States in several fields, such as 23 
music, sports, government, finance, fashion, and the arts, and 24 
 WHEREAS, Dominican Americans continue to enrich the 25  

diversity of this state by sharing thei r unique accomplishments, 26 
traditions, culture, and cuisine, NOW, THEREFORE, 27

Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of 29 
Florida: 30 
 31 
 That February 27, 2024, is recognized as "Dominican -32 
American Heritage Day" in Florida to celebrate Do minican 33 
Republic Independence Day and the invaluable economic, social, 34 
and cultural contributions of Dominican Americans throughout 35 
this state. 36
