2020 WHEREAS, on February 14, 2018, Valentine's Day, students, 9
2121 faculty, and staff at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in 10
2222 Parkland arrived on campus for a school day that began like any 11
2323 other, and 12
2424 WHEREAS, at 2:19 p.m., a 19 -year-old former student of the 13
2525 school was dropped off by an Uber driver on the east side of the 14
2626 Marjory Stoneman Douglas campus, and 15
2727 WHEREAS, the young man was carrying a rifle bag, and 16
2828 minutes later entered the east hallway doors of Building 12 on 17
2929 the campus, where he removed his semiautomatic rifle from the 18
3030 bag, loaded the weapon, and donned a magazine -carrying vest, and 19
3131 WHEREAS, at 2:21 p.m., the young man fired the first rounds 20
3232 to the west of the first floor hallway, striking four students, 21
3333 only one of whom survived her injuries, and 22
3434 WHEREAS, in the minutes that followed, the young man 23
3535 repeatedly fired into classrooms and at those within his line of 24

4747 WHEREAS, at 2:22 p.m., the first 911 call, coming from 26
4848 inside Building 12, was received by a law enforcement 27
4949 communications center in Coral Springs, and 28
5050 WHEREAS, at 2:27 p.m., the young man fired his last 29
5151 gunshot, entered the west stairwell on the third floor of 30
5252 Building 12, placed his rifle vest and 180 rounds of live rounds 31
5353 on the ground, and ran down the stairs, joining in with a large 32
5454 group of students who were fleeing the campus, and 33
5555 WHEREAS, in those terrifying 6 minutes from the beginning 34
5656 of the assault to his exit from the building, the young man took 35
5757 the lives of 17 members of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High 36
5858 School family and wounded 17 others, many of them gravely, and 37
5959 traumatized thousands of others, and 38
6060 WHEREAS, those who died were 14 -year-old Alyssa Alhadeff, 39
6161 an honor student and athlete; Scott Beigel, age 35, a teacher 40
6262 and coach with a passion for volunteerism; 14 -year-old Martin 41
6363 Duque Anguiano, Jr., an honor student and JROTC cadet corporal; 42
6464 17-year-old Nicholas Dworet, captain of the swim team and 43
6565 selected by faculty as one of twenty first -class graduating 44
6666 seniors who excelled in academic achievement, character, 45
6767 community service, and athletic achievement; Aaron Feis, age 37, 46
6868 a loving husband and a de voted father, coach, and mentor who 47
6969 always put his family first; 14 -year-old Jaime Guttenberg, a 48
7070 competitive dancer and a volunteer to children with special 49

9494 14-year-old Alaina Petty, a vibrant and determined first -year 63
9595 cadet in the JROTC program, where she achieved the highest rank 64
9696 possible for a freshman; 18 -year-old Meadow Pollack, who aspired 65
9797 to be an attorney and a mom and who, while small in stature, 66
9898 projected strength and determination; 17 -year-old Helena Ramsay, 67
9999 who had friends from all cultures, was passionate about 68

118118 the JROTC program — honor, duty, respect, loyalty, selfless 77

120120 West Point class of 2025 and awarded the institution's Medal of 79
121121 Heroism for his actions to save fel low students on that day, and 80
122122 WHEREAS, on February 14, 2018, amid the terror and carnage 81
123123 of that day, there were extraordinary acts of courage by members 82
124124 of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas family, several of whom gave 83
125125 their lives in the protection of others, and 84
126126 WHEREAS, the events of February 14, 2018, at Marjory 85
127127 Stoneman Douglas High School forever changed the lives of the 86
128128 students, faculty, and staff who survived the massacre and their 87
129129 family members, the first responders who rushed to the scene, 88
130130 the health care workers who tended to the wounded, and all who 89
131131 witnessed the carnage, and many more throughout the community, 90

133133 WHEREAS, out of the tragedy came hope in the scores of 92
134134 students who survived the attack and who joined together to make 93
135135 change and attempt to ensure that the events of February 14, 94
136136 2018, will not be forgotten, and the several family members who 95
137137 chose to turn their pain into purpose by advocating for the 96
138138 enactment of laws, policies, and practices to make our schools 97
