16	16	WHEREAS, a blood clot is a mass of blood that forms when 5
17	17	platelets, proteins, and cells in the blood stick together which 6
18	18	may naturally occur after an injury to stop bleeding and to help 7
19	19	the wound heal, and 8
20	20	WHEREAS, blood clots can be dangerous if they form where 9
21	21	they should not, the body makes too many blood clots or abnormal 10
22	22	blood clots, or the blood clots that formed to stop bleeding do 11
23	23	not break down following an injury, and 12
24	24	WHEREAS, blood clots do not discriminate by age, gender, 13
25	25	ethnicity, or race and may lead to illness, disability, or even 14
26	26	death if not treated early, and 15
27	27	WHEREAS, as indicated by the public education campaign 16
28	28	"Stop the Clot, Spread the Word," made possible through the 17
29	29	partnership of the National Blood Clot Alliance and the Centers 18
30	30	for Disease Control and Prevention, up to 900,000 people are 19
31	31	negatively affected by blood clots every year, and 20
32	32	WHEREAS, an estimated 100,000 Americans die annually due to 21
33	33	blood clots and many others have long-term complications, and 22
34	34	WHEREAS, blood clots may be further defined as deep vein 23
35	35	thrombosis or pulmonary embolisms, and 24 

46	46	WHEREAS, deep vein thrombosis occurs if a blood clot forms 25
47	47	in one of the large veins, typically in a person's lower leg, 26
48	48	thigh, pelvis, or arm which may partly or completely block the 27
49	49	flow of blood or blood circulation in the body, and if 28
50	50	untreated, it can travel to the lungs, causing a blockage known 29
51	51	as a pulmonary embolism, which requires immediate medical 30
52	52	attention, and 31
53	53	WHEREAS, it is important to recognize the signs and 32
54	54	symptoms of a blood clot and deep vein thrombosis which often 33
55	55	presents as swelling, pain, tenderness, and redness or 34
56	56	discoloration of the skin at the affected area, and 35
57	57	WHEREAS, a pulmonary embolism is oft en associated with 36
58	58	difficulty breathing, a faster than normal or irregular 37
59	59	heartbeat, coughing up blood, and very low blood pressure, 38
60	60	lightheadedness, or fainting, and 39
61	61	WHEREAS, the negative consequences of blood clots are 40
62	62	preventable, and the best ways to avoid them include knowing the 41
63	63	risk factors, recognizing the signs and symptoms, informing a 42
64	64	medical professional of any risk factors, speaking with a 43
65	65	medical professional about blood clots before any surgical 44
66	66	procedure, and seeing a medical professional as soon as possible 45
67	67	when symptoms emerge, and 46
68	68	WHEREAS, to better inform the public of the risks, signs, 47
69	69	and symptoms of blood clots, the National Blood Clot Alliance 48 

83	83	Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of 52

86	86	That the month of March 2025 is recognized as "Blood Clot 55
87	87	Awareness Month" in the State of Florida in order to raise 56
88	88	public awareness of prevention measures and of the signs and 57
89	89	symptoms of blood clots and to help residents of this state 58
90	90	avoid the negative health consequences associated with blood 59
91	91	clots. 60
