1616 WHEREAS, a blood clot is a mass of blood that forms when 5
1717 platelets, proteins, and cells in the blood stick together which 6
1818 may naturally occur after an injury to stop bleeding and to help 7
1919 the wound heal, and 8
2020 WHEREAS, blood clots can be dangerous if they form where 9
2121 they should not, the body makes too many blood clots or abnormal 10
2222 blood clots, or the blood clots that formed to stop bleeding do 11
2323 not break down following an injury, and 12
2424 WHEREAS, blood clots do not discriminate by age, gender, 13
2525 ethnicity, or race and may lead to illness, disability, or even 14
2626 death if not treated early, and 15
2727 WHEREAS, as indicated by the public education campaign 16
2828 "Stop the Clot, Spread the Word," made possible through the 17
2929 partnership of the National Blood Clot Alliance and the Centers 18
3030 for Disease Control and Prevention, up to 900,000 people are 19
3131 negatively affected by blood clots every year, and 20
3232 WHEREAS, an estimated 100,000 Americans die annually due to 21
3333 blood clots and many others have long-term complications, and 22
3434 WHEREAS, blood clots may be further defined as deep vein 23
3535 thrombosis or pulmonary embolisms, and 24 

4646 WHEREAS, deep vein thrombosis occurs if a blood clot forms 25
4747 in one of the large veins, typically in a person's lower leg, 26
4848 thigh, pelvis, or arm which may partly or completely block the 27
4949 flow of blood or blood circulation in the body, and if 28
5050 untreated, it can travel to the lungs, causing a blockage known 29
5151 as a pulmonary embolism, which requires immediate medical 30
5252 attention, and 31
5353 WHEREAS, it is important to recognize the signs and 32
5454 symptoms of a blood clot and deep vein thrombosis which often 33
5555 presents as swelling, pain, tenderness, and redness or 34
5656 discoloration of the skin at the affected area, and 35
5757 WHEREAS, a pulmonary embolism is oft en associated with 36
5858 difficulty breathing, a faster than normal or irregular 37
5959 heartbeat, coughing up blood, and very low blood pressure, 38
6060 lightheadedness, or fainting, and 39
6161 WHEREAS, the negative consequences of blood clots are 40
6262 preventable, and the best ways to avoid them include knowing the 41
6363 risk factors, recognizing the signs and symptoms, informing a 42
6464 medical professional of any risk factors, speaking with a 43
6565 medical professional about blood clots before any surgical 44
6666 procedure, and seeing a medical professional as soon as possible 45
6767 when symptoms emerge, and 46
6868 WHEREAS, to better inform the public of the risks, signs, 47
6969 and symptoms of blood clots, the National Blood Clot Alliance 48 

8686 That the month of March 2025 is recognized as "Blood Clot 55
8787 Awareness Month" in the State of Florida in order to raise 56
8888 public awareness of prevention measures and of the signs and 57
8989 symptoms of blood clots and to help residents of this state 58
9090 avoid the negative health consequences associated with blood 59
9191 clots. 60
