HR 8069 2025 hr8069-00 Page 1 of 3 F L O R I D A H O U S E O F R E P R E S E N T A T I V E S House Resolution 1 A resolution recognizing May 2025 as "Muslim -American 2 Heritage Month" in Florida and celebrating the 3 heritage and culture of Muslim Americans in this 4 state. 5 6 WHEREAS, Muslim immigration to the American colonies began 7 with the arrival of indentured workers in the early years of 8 this country's founding, and 9 WHEREAS, between the 16th and 19th centuries, many enslaved 10 Africans brought to the United States were Mus lim, contributing 11 to the early presence of Islam in America, and 12 WHEREAS, in the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries, successive 13 waves of Muslim immigrants came to the United States seeking 14 economic, social, and religious freedom, enriching communities 15 throughout this state and nation across diverse fields, 16 including business, medicine, education, law, and the arts, and 17 WHEREAS, Muslim Americans contribute greatly to charitable 18 organizations in Florida and across the nation, offering aid to 19 people of all faiths through humanitarian work, such as medical 20 services, educational programs, food distribution, refugee 21 services, and disaster relief, and 22 WHEREAS, Muslim Americans have made significant 23 advancements in numerous fields, including architecture, arts, 24 business, medicine, law, sports, and government, enhancing the 25 HR 8069 2025 hr8069-00 Page 2 of 3 F L O R I D A H O U S E O F R E P R E S E N T A T I V E S quality of life and cultural diversity in this state and the 26 United States, and 27 WHEREAS, prominent Floridian Muslim Americans such as 28 Shahid Khan, a Pakistani -American businessman and owner of the 29 Jacksonville Jaguars, and Alli A.B. Majeed, Brevard County's 30 longest serving county judge, exemplify the profound impact 31 Muslim Americans have had on Florida's economy and legal system, 32 and 33 WHEREAS, Muslim Americans, such as Christopher Benjamin, 34 the first Muslim American elected to the Florida House of 35 Representatives, have shown leadership in public service, and 36 WHEREAS, Muslim Americans have served honorably in the 37 United States Armed Forces, contributing to the defense and 38 protection of the United Sta tes in every major conflict, 39 including Captain Humayun Khan, a Muslim American who made the 40 ultimate sacrifice in Iraq in 2004, and 41 WHEREAS, the Muslim-American community in Florida is 42 composed of individuals from more than 85 countries, 43 representing a wide array of ethnicities, cultures, and 44 languages, adding to the state's vibrant multicultural 45 landscape, and 46 WHEREAS, the Muslim-American community faces challenges, 47 including discrimination and misunderstanding, yet it continues 48 to thrive and contribute to the progress of this state and the 49 United States, NOW, THEREFORE, 50 HR 8069 2025 hr8069-00 Page 3 of 3 F L O R I D A H O U S E O F R E P R E S E N T A T I V E S 51 Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of 52 Florida: 53 54 That May 2025 is recognized as "Muslim -American Heritage 55 Month" in Florida to celebrate the heritage and cul ture of 56 Muslim Americans in this state. 57
