A resolution recognizing July 25, 2025, as "Afro -2 
Latina, Afro-Caribbean, and Diaspora Women's Day" in 3 
Florida. 4 
 5 
 WHEREAS, Afro-descendant women across the globe have played 6 
an indelible role in shaping societies, enriching cultures, and 7 
advancing the cause of equality, justice, and human rights, and 8 
 WHEREAS, the music of Celia Cruz, the "Queen of Salsa," 9 
transcended borders and generations with her electrifying 10 
performances, powerful voice, and unwavering commitment to her 11 
Afro-Cuban roots, and 12 
 WHEREAS, Miriam Jiménez Román, a pioneering scholar, 13 
writer, and activist, has dedicated her life to amplifying the 14 
voices and experiences of Afro -Latinas through her 15 
groundbreaking research, publications, and advocacy efforts, 16 
contributing to the recognition and empowerment of Afro -Latina 17 
women, and 18 
 WHEREAS, Suzanne Comhaire -Sylvain, Haiti's first female 19 
anthropologist, made significant contributions to the study of 20 
Haitian culture, language, and identity through her pioneering 21 
research on Haitian Creole, enriching the understanding of Afro -22 
Caribbean cultural heritage, and 23 
 WHEREAS, Louise Bennett -Coverley, affectionately known as 24 
"Miss Lou," revolutionized Jamaican cultur al expression through 25  

her poetry, folklore, and advocacy for the use of Jamaican 26 
Patois. As a poet, broadcaster, and performer, she preserved and 27 
elevated the oral traditions of Jamaica, inspiring generations 28 
to embrace their linguistic heritage and celebr ate the vibrancy 29 
of Afro-Caribbean identity, and 30 
 WHEREAS, July 25, 2025, is internationally commemorated as 31 
a day to celebrate the heritage and contributions of Afro -32 
descendant women around the world, and 33 
 WHEREAS, this occasion provides an opportunity to reflect 34 
on the achievements and cultural legacies of Afro -Latina, Afro-35 
Caribbean, and diaspora women, including those who live and 36 
contribute to communities across Florida, NOW, THEREFORE, 37 
 38 
Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of 39 
Florida: 40

 That July 25, 2025, is recognized as "Afro -Latina, Afro-42 
Caribbean, and Diaspora Women's Day" in Florida. 43
