23 LC 112 1736 House Resolution 26EX By: Representatives Schofield of the 63 rd , Scott of the 76 th , and Davis of the 87 th A RESOLUTION Commending Alvin Dollar; and for other purposes. 1 WHEREAS, Alvin Dollar, a third-generation Atlanta native, has steadfastly represented his2 beloved city with unwavering pride and commitment throughout his life; and3 WHEREAS, born in 1948 to Adel and Lillie Dollar as one of eight siblings, Alvin proudly4 carries the moniker of a "Grady Baby"; and5 WHEREAS, Alvin's dedication to improving the quality of life across metro Atlanta is best6 exemplified by his tireless advocacy for poverty rights, mental health, and economic7 development; and8 WHEREAS, he gained valuable insights and wisdom through his early social work with9 CETA, the Butler St. YMCA, and the Downtown Labor Center, which led him to develop10 programs that provided comprehensive support such as childcare, job training, and substance11 abuse counseling; and12 WHEREAS, he worked with the first coalition of Homeless Advocates responsible for the13 creation of Atlanta's Task Force for the Homeless and served as a founding board member14 H. R. 26EX - 1 - 23 LC 112 1736 of Roots Adoption Agency, which was dedicated to finding homes for African American 15 children; and16 WHEREAS, his involvement in the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Task Force, Grady Special17 Infant Unit, reflects his commitment to ensuring the well-being of Atlanta's youth and18 combating high infant mortality rates; and19 WHEREAS, Alvin's enduring impact extends to his tenure as director at the Dunbar20 Neighborhood Center, which he transformed into a vibrant hub for learning, laughter, and21 growth, earning him the esteemed title of Georgia Hero in 1995; and22 WHEREAS, shortly thereafter in 1996, when Atlanta welcomed the world, he shared his23 story and ran with the Olympic torch across the streets of his hometown; and24 WHEREAS, ever ready to be a part of societal change, Alvin has actively participated in25 various political campaigns over the years and is honored to have represented Georgia at the26 1988 Democratic Convention; and27 WHEREAS, since stepping onto the Board of the ArtsXchange in 2019, he has continued to28 share his stories, build bridges in the community, and dedicate his time and energy toward29 supporting and promoting the organization; and30 WHEREAS, Alvin's additional extensive service on numerous boards and advisory councils,31 including his role as an active member of the National Association of Black Social Workers,32 stands as testament to his enduring commitment to effecting positive change; and33 H. R. 26EX - 2 - 23 LC 112 1736 WHEREAS, his legacy was further cemented by the announcement of a scholarship in his 34 name for emerging practitioners at the 2023 National Association of Black Social Workers,35 ensuring that his work will continue to inspire and guide future generations; and36 WHEREAS, by the example Alvin has made of his life, he makes this world a better place37 in which to live, and it is only fitting and proper that he be appropriately honored.38 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that39 the members of this body commend Alvin Dollar for his unselfish, dedicated, and loving40 service to the members of his community and state as well as extend their most sincere best41 wishes for continued health and happiness.42 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized43 and directed to make an appropriate copy of this resolution available for distribution to Alvin44 Dollar.45 H.
