1717 A RESOLUTION
1818 Recognizing February 7, 2023, as Skin Cancer Awareness Day at the state capitol; and for

2020 other purposes.2
2121 WHEREAS, melanoma and other skin cancers are one of the most preventable, yet fatal,3
2222 forms of cancer, accounting for more than 50 percent of all cancers combined, including4
2323 breast, lung, and prostate cancer; and5
2424 WHEREAS, one American dies of melanoma every 67 minutes, and the estimated total6
2525 direct annual cost of melanoma treatment exceeds $290 million; and7
2626 WHEREAS, it is reported that of the one million newly diagnosed cases of melanoma and8
2727 other skin cancers each year, an estimated 10,710 people will die; and9
2828 WHEREAS, the objectives of the Georgia Society of Dermatology and Dermatologic10
2929 Surgery are to promote the highest possible standards of clinical practice, education, and11
3030 research in dermatologic medicine and surgery and related disciplines; to promote the public12
3131 interest relating to dermatology; to advocate on behalf of dermatology and high-quality13
3232 patient care; and to provide a forum for the discussion of medical and practice related14

3636 WHEREAS, the Atlanta Dermatological Association is an association of dermatologists

3838 practicing in the greater Atlanta area, dedicated to promoting the highest possible standards17
3939 of clinical practice, education, and research in dermatologic medicine, surgery, and related18
4040 disciplines while promoting the public interest relating to dermatology and providing a forum19
4141 for the discussion of medical and practice related problems; and20
4242 WHEREAS, the mission of the Skin Cancer Awareness Network Foundation is to create21
4343 public awareness of the dangers of excessive or unprotected direct exposure to the sun or22
4444 both and to educate people about preventive safety measures to avoid or lessen the chances23
4545 of developing melanoma or one of the other preventable skin cancers; and24
4646 WHEREAS, it is necessary to encourage public awareness of the dangers of excessive or25
4747 unprotected direct exposure to the sun and to educate people about preventive safety26
4848 measures to avoid or lessen the chances of developing melanoma or one of the other27
4949 preventable skin cancers while still being able to safely enjoy outdoor activities.28
5050 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that29
5151 the members of this body encourage all Georgians to have a greater awareness of the risks30
5252 of skin cancer and the need for early diagnosis of skin cancer and recognize February 7,31
5353 2023, as Skin Cancer Awareness Day at the state capitol.32
5454 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized33
5555 and directed to make appropriate copies of this resolution available for distribution to the34
5656 Georgia Society of Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery, the Atlanta Dermatological35
5757 Association, and the Skin Cancer Awareness Network Foundation.36
