24 LC 112 2359 House Resolution 1378 By: Representatives Lim of the 98 th , Olaleye of the 59 th , Byrd of the 20 th , Neal of the 79 th , Au of the 50 th , and others A RESOLUTION Recognizing March 11, 2024, as Fil-Am Day at the state capitol; and for other purposes. 1 WHEREAS, members of the Filipino-American (Fil-Am) community contribute to the2 diverse culture and economy of Georgia, with robust participation in the religious, cultural,3 and social lives of their local communities; and4 WHEREAS, Georgia is home to more than 47,724 Filipino-Americans who are members of5 the United States Armed Forces and who work as health care professionals, scientists,6 engineers, entrepreneurs, accountants, educators, attorneys, public servants, civic leaders, and7 many other professions; and8 WHEREAS, annually on June 12, Filipino-Americans in Georgia celebrate the proclamation9 of Philippine Independence from Spain. In Atlanta, Filipino-Americans, represented by the10 Kalayaan Atlanta Committee and in coordination with Makabayan Georgia Inc. and the11 Philippine Honorary Consulate General, host Filipino-Americans and supporters from around12 the Southeast by showcasing rich traditions of food, dance, art, music, national dress, and13 much more; and14 H. R. 1378 - 1 - 24 LC 112 2359 WHEREAS, the United States and the Philippines have had a close relationship since 1898, 15 when the Philippines was ceded to the United States by Spain in the Treaty of Paris. The16 Philippines was part of the United States until 1946 and served as a valuable ally during17 World War II in the fight against Japan; and18 WHEREAS, Filipino-Americans in Georgia have served in a variety of judicial and elected19 roles, including Rizza Palmares O'Connor, former Chief Magistrate Judge for Toombs20 County; Bryan C. Ramos, current Chief Judge for the Municipal Court of the City of21 Brookhaven; and Representative Marvin Lim, the sponsor of this resolution.22 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that23 the members of this body commend the Filipino-American community in Georgia and24 recognize March 11, 2024, as Fil-Am Day at the state capitol.25 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized26 and directed to make appropriate copies of this resolution available for distribution to the27 public and the press.28 H.
