14	14	Recognizing Representative Maretta Mitchell Taylor and dedicating an interchange in her

16	16	memory; and for other purposes.2
17	17	WHEREAS, Representative Maretta Mitchell Taylor has long been recognized by the3
18	18	citizens of this state for the vital role that she played in leadership and her deep personal4
19	19	commitment to the welfare of the citizens of Muscogee County; and5
20	20	WHEREAS, a graduate of Williams H. Spencer High School, Representative Taylor earned6
21	21	a bachelor's degree from Albany State College and a master's degree from Indiana7
22	22	University; and8
23	23	WHEREAS, she diligently and conscientiously devoted innumerable hours of her time,9
24	24	talents, and energy toward the betterment of her community and state and uplifting the minds10
25	25	of the next generation as evidenced dramatically by her 30 years of public service as an11
26	26	educator and media specialist; and12
27	27	WHEREAS, Representative Taylor was the first African American woman elected to House13
28	28	District 94 for the Georgia House of Representatives and served on the Muscogee County14
29	29	Election and Voter Registration Board; and15

32	32	WHEREAS, her legacy of decisive and effective leadership and service to her community

34	34	spanned four decades; and17
35	35	WHEREAS, Representative Taylor was recognized with numerous honors and awards,18
36	36	including the 2000 Legislature Appreciation Award from the Georgia Association for19
37	37	Primary Health Care, the Legacy of Leadership Award and Outstanding Legislator of the20
38	38	Year for 2000 from the Professional Association of Georgia Educators, and the Rosa Parks21
39	39	Award from Columbus PUSH; and22
40	40	WHEREAS, she was an active member of numerous organizations, including the Albany23
41	41	State National Alumni Association, Assault on Illiteracy, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority,24
42	42	Columbus Georgia Chapter Links, Inc., Compatibles Social Club, Georgia Heart Fund Drive,25
43	43	Springer Children's Theater, and the United Negro College Fund Committee; and26
44	44	WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that this remarkable and distinguished27
45	45	Georgian be recognized appropriately by dedicating an interchange in her memory.28
46	46	NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED AND ENACTED BY THE GENERAL29
47	47	ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA that the interchange at Interstate 85 and Buena Vista Road30
48	48	Interchange in Muscogee County is dedicated as the State Representative Maretta Mitchell31
49	49	Taylor Interchange.32
50	50	BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Transportation is authorized and33
51	51	directed to erect and maintain appropriate signs dedicating the State Representative Maretta34
52	52	Mitchell Taylor Interchange.35

55	55	BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized

57	57	and directed to make appropriate copies of this resolution available for distribution to the37
58	58	family of Representative Maretta Mitchell Taylor and to the Department of Transportation.38
