8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Booker T. Washington High School is a public high school in Atlanta, Georgia,3 |

9 | 9 | | which opened in September 1924 under the auspices of the Atlanta Board of Education. It4 |

10 | 10 | | was the first public high school for African Americans in the Atlanta Public Schools System5 |
---|
11 | 11 | | and the State of Georgia; and6 |
---|
12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, this historic institution was named for one of the foremost African American7 |
---|
13 | 13 | | educators of the late 19th and early 20th centuries; educator, author, and orator Booker T.8 |
---|
14 | 14 | | Washington, who was born into slavery and rose to prominence as the first leader of the new9 |

15 | 15 | | Tuskegee Institute in 1881. He played a dominant role in Black politics; was co-founder of10 |

16 | 16 | | the National Negro Business League; and was so acclaimed as a public leader that the period11 |

17 | 17 | | from 1880 to 1915 has been called the "Age of Booker T. Washington"; and12 |

18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, the high school is the site of the only exact replica of the original bronze13 |

58 | 58 | | NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body47 |
