1616 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
1717 AN ACT
1818 To amend Chapter 4 of Title 1 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to
1919 1
2020 holidays and observances, so as to designate the fourth Friday in November of each year as2
2121 "National Sugarcane Syrup Day" in Georgia; to provide legislative findings and declarations;3
2222 to provide for related matters; to repeal conflicting laws; and for other purposes.4
2323 BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA:5
2424 SECTION 1.6
2525 The General Assembly finds that:7
2626 (1) Making sugarcane syrup has been a part of family farm tradition for generations,8
2727 particularly in Georgia;9
2828 (2) The increase in production costs, competition from artificial syrups, and the decreasing10
2929 number of farmers who still make sugarcane syrup, however, has led some to refer to the11
3030 making of sugarcane syrup as a dying art;12
3131 (3) Establishing a "National Sugarcane Syrup Day" in Georgia would help to preserve the13
3232 art of making sugarcane syrup by honoring those who continue with this long-standing14
3333 family farm tradition and by raising public awareness of the differences between natural15
3434 sugarcane syrup and artificial syrups; 16

3737 (4) Designating the fourth Friday in November of each year, the day after Thanksgiving,
3838 17
3939 as "National Sugarcane Syrup Day" is particularly fitting, as it is not only a time when18
4040 families gather and celebrate together, but also a time when some say sugarcane is at its19
4141 sweetest in Georgia; and20
4242 (5) It is, therefore, abundantly fitting and proper that the State of Georgia appropriately21
4343 recognize and honor the family farm tradition of making sugarcane syrup by designating22
4444 the fourth Friday in November of each year as "National Sugarcane Syrup Day" in Georgia.23
4545 SECTION 2.24
4646 Chapter 4 of Title 1 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to holidays and25
4747 observances, is amended by adding a new Code section to read as follows:26
4848 "1-4-27.
4949 27
5050 The fourth Friday in November of each year is designated as 'National Sugarcane Syrup28
5151 Day' in Georgia."29
5252 SECTION 3.30
