17 | 17 | | AN ACT |

18 | 18 | | To amend Chapter 4 of Title 1 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to |

19 | 19 | | 1 |
---|
20 | 20 | | holidays and observances, so as to designate the fourth Friday in November of each year as2 |

21 | 21 | | "National Sugarcane Syrup Day" in Georgia; to provide legislative findings and declarations;3 |

23 | 23 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA:5 |
---|
24 | 24 | | SECTION 1.6 |
---|
25 | 25 | | The General Assembly finds that:7 |
---|
26 | 26 | | (1) Making sugarcane syrup has been a part of family farm tradition for generations,8 |
---|
27 | 27 | | particularly in Georgia;9 |
---|
28 | 28 | | (2) The increase in production costs, competition from artificial syrups, and the decreasing10 |
---|
29 | 29 | | number of farmers who still make sugarcane syrup, however, has led some to refer to the11 |
---|
30 | 30 | | making of sugarcane syrup as a dying art;12 |
---|
31 | 31 | | (3) Establishing a "National Sugarcane Syrup Day" in Georgia would help to preserve the13 |
---|
32 | 32 | | art of making sugarcane syrup by honoring those who continue with this long-standing14 |
---|
33 | 33 | | family farm tradition and by raising public awareness of the differences between natural15 |

34 | 34 | | sugarcane syrup and artificial syrups; 16 |

37 | 37 | | (4) Designating the fourth Friday in November of each year, the day after Thanksgiving, |
---|
38 | 38 | | 17 |
---|
39 | 39 | | as "National Sugarcane Syrup Day" is particularly fitting, as it is not only a time when18 |
---|
40 | 40 | | families gather and celebrate together, but also a time when some say sugarcane is at its19 |
---|
41 | 41 | | sweetest in Georgia; and20 |
---|
42 | 42 | | (5) It is, therefore, abundantly fitting and proper that the State of Georgia appropriately21 |
---|
43 | 43 | | recognize and honor the family farm tradition of making sugarcane syrup by designating22 |
---|
44 | 44 | | the fourth Friday in November of each year as "National Sugarcane Syrup Day" in Georgia.23 |

45 | 45 | | SECTION 2.24 |

46 | 46 | | Chapter 4 of Title 1 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to holidays and25 |
