1717 To amend Part 3 of Article 16 of Chapter 2 of Title 20 of the Official Code of Georgia

1919 Annotated, relating to student health in elementary and secondary education, so as to require2
2020 local school systems to provide certain information to parents and guardians of students in3
2121 grades six through 12 on sickle cell disease whenever other health information is provided;4
2222 to provide for related matters; to repeal conflicting laws; and for other purposes.5
2323 BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA:6
2424 SECTION 1.7
2525 Part 3 of Article 16 of Chapter 2 of Title 20 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated,8
2626 relating to student health in elementary and secondary education, is amended by adding a9
2727 new Code section to read as follows:10

3030 (a) If a local board of education provides information on immunizations, infectious12
3131 diseases, medications, or other school health issues to parents and guardians of students in13
3232 grades six through 12, then the following information about sickle cell disease shall be14
3333 included:15
3434 (1) A description of sickle cell disease;16

3737 (2) A description of the risk factors and warning signs associated with sickle cell disease;17
3838 (3) A recommendation to the parent or guardian of those students displaying warning18
3939 signs associated with sickle cell disease that such parent or guardian consult with the19
4040 student's primary care provider to determine if immediate screening for sickle cell disease20
4141 is appropriate;21
4242 (4) A description of the screening processes for sickle cell disease; and22
4343 (5) A recommendation that, following a sickle cell disease diagnosis, the parent or23
4444 guardian consult with the student's primary care provider to develop an appropriate24
4545 treatment plan.25
4646 (b) The Department of Education, in cooperation with the Department of Public Health,26
4747 shall develop and make available the information about sickle cell disease to local school27
4848 systems as required under subsection (a) of this Code section in an efficient manner that28
4949 shall include posting the information on its public website."29
5050 SECTION 2.30
5151 All laws and parts of laws in conflict with this Act are repealed.31
