1616 AN ACT
1717 To amend Article 1 of Chapter 1 of Title 40 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated,

1919 relating to general provisions relative to identification and regulation of motor vehicles, so2
2020 as to require a law enforcement officer making a traffic stop to provide the operator with the3
2121 purpose of the stop upon request after such operator displays his or her driver's license; to4
2222 provide for a short title; to provide for related matters; to repeal conflicting laws; and for5
2323 other purposes.6
2424 BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA:7
2525 SECTION 1.8
2626 This Act shall be known and may be cited as the "De-escalation Right To Know Law."9
2727 SECTION 2.10
2828 Article 1 of Chapter 1 of Title 40 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to11
2929 general provisions relative to identification and regulation of motor vehicles, is amended by12
3030 adding a new Code section to read as follows:13

3434 Upon request from the operator of a vehicle stopped by a law enforcement officer for a15
3535 traffic related offense, a law enforcement officer shall provide such operator with the16
3636 purpose of the stop and suspected traffic law violation, provided that such operator first17
3737 displays his or her driver's license pursuant to Code Section 40-5-29. Failure by a law18
3838 enforcement officer to comply with this Code section shall not invalidate an otherwise19
3939 lawful arrest or prevent the issuance of a uniform traffic citation."20
4040 SECTION 3.21
4141 All laws and parts of laws in conflict with this Act are repealed.22
