A RESOLUTION
Honoring the life and memory of Reverend Dr. Homer Lee Mitchell Sr.; and for other

purposes.2
WHEREAS, the State of Georgia mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished citizens3
with the passing of Reverend Dr. Homer Lee Mitchell Sr. on January 25, 2025; and4
WHEREAS, Reverend Dr. Homer Lee Mitchell Sr. was born on December 19, 1934, in5
Pittsview, Alabama, a beloved son of Jessie and Bertha Mitchell; and6
WHEREAS, he began his professional career as a civil service employee at Fort Moore,7
Georgia, before answering his divine calling to ministry in 1972 and delivering his trial8
sermon at Antioch Baptist Church in Pittsview; and9
WHEREAS, his pastoral journey began in 1973 when he was called to lead three10
churches—Liberty Hill Baptist Church in Phenix City, Alabama; Antioch Baptist Church in11
Columbus, Georgia; and Rising Star Baptist Church in Marvyn, Alabama—faithfully12
managing their alternating service schedules before becoming the full-time pastor of Antioch13
Baptist Church in 1983; and14

WHEREAS, he ultimately served as pastor of Antioch Baptist Church for 43 years, Rising

Star Baptist Church for 28 years, and Liberty Hill Baptist Church for 10 years before his16
retirement; and17
WHEREAS, in addition to his pastoral service, he held leadership roles in the National18
Baptist Convention USA, the Phenix City East Alabama Ministerial Alliance, and the Fourth19
District General Missionary Baptist Convention of Georgia; and20
WHEREAS, he was united in love and marriage to his beloved wife of 57 years, Lucille, and21
was blessed with four remarkable children, Howard, Homer Jr., Alton, and Shelby; seven22
wonderful grandchildren; and five outstanding great-grandchildren; and23
WHEREAS, a compassionate and generous man who demonstrated his commitment to24
witnessing Christ through word and deed, Reverend Dr. Homer Lee Mitchell Sr. will long25
be remembered for his love of family, friendship, and community and will be missed by all26
who had the great fortune of knowing him.27
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that28
the members of this body join in honoring the life and memory of Reverend Dr. Homer Lee29
Mitchell Sr. and express their deepest and most sincere regret at his passing.30
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized31
and directed to make an appropriate copy of this resolution available for distribution to the32
family of Reverend Dr. Homer Lee Mitchell Sr.33
