25 LC 112 2808 House Resolution 126 By: Representatives Park of the 107 th , McClain of the 109 th , Adeyina of the 110 th , Beckles of the 96 th , Okoye of the 102 nd , and others A RESOLUTION Recognizing and commending Sirish Subash, the winner of the 3M Young Scientist 1 Challenge; and for other purposes.2 WHEREAS, on October 16, 2024, 3M and Discovery Education named Sirish Subash, a3 ninth grader at the Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science, and Technology, the winner4 of the 2024 3M Young Scientist Challenge, the nation's premier middle school science5 competition; and6 WHEREAS, Sirish demonstrated ingenuity, innovative thinking, a strong application of7 STEM principles, a passion for research, exceptional presentation skills, and the ability to8 inspire others; and9 WHEREAS, he spent four months competing against nine other finalists and secured his10 victory during the final challenge events held at 3M global headquarters in St. Paul,11 Minnesota, on October 14 and 15, 2024; and12 WHEREAS, his winning project, Pestiscand, is a handheld device designed to detect13 pesticide residues on produce using a non-destructive method that employs14 spectrophotometry to measure how light of various wavelengths is reflected off the surface15 H. R. 126 - 1 - 25 LC 112 2808 of fruits and vegetables, with a machine learning model analyzing this data to determine the 16 presence of pesticides; and17 WHEREAS, Pestiscand consists of a sensor, a power supply, a display screen, and a18 processor; during testing, the device achieved an accuracy rate of greater than 85 percent in19 identifying pesticide residues on spinach and tomatoes, meeting the project's objectives for20 effectiveness and speed; and21 WHEREAS, such achievements contribute to the advancement of scientific knowledge and22 highlight the importance of supporting educational endeavors in the sciences; and23 WHEREAS, the State of Georgia, with its rich tradition of fostering excellence and24 innovation, takes immense pride in celebrating the achievements of its young scholars, whose25 brilliance and dedication illuminate a bright future not only for this great state but for the26 nation and the world.27 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that28 the members of this body recognize and commend Sirish Subash for his outstanding efforts29 and extend best wishes for his continued success in all future endeavors.30 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized31 and directed to make appropriate copies of this resolution available for distribution to the32 public and the press.33 H.
