1111 WHEREAS, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity2
1212 established for African American men, was founded at Cornell University in Ithaca, New3
1313 York, on December 4, 1906, by Henry Arthur Callis, Charles Henry Chapman, Eugene4
1414 Kinckle Jones, George Biddle Kelley, Nathaniel Allison Murray, Robert Harold Ogle, and5
1515 Vertner Woodson Tandy; known as the "Jewels," these men recognized the need for a strong6
1616 bond of brotherhood among African descendants in this country; and7
1717 WHEREAS, for 118 years, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., has been a beacon of light to8
1818 the community by staying true to its aims of manly deeds, scholarship, and love for all9
1919 mankind; and10
2020 WHEREAS, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., has a membership of more than 70,00011
2121 college-educated men inducted into over 700 college and alumni chapters in the United12
2222 States, Europe, Asia, and the Caribbean; and13
2323 WHEREAS, this esteemed fraternity continues to live out its mission of developing leaders,14
2424 promoting brotherhood and academic excellence, and providing service and advocacy for our15

2727 communities by contributing more than $2.3 million in educational scholarships and

2929 volunteering 850,000 community service hours; and17
3030 WHEREAS, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., counts many renowned Georgians as18
3131 members, including Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Ambassador Andrew Young, Mayor19
3232 Maynard H. Jackson, Senator Raphael Warnock, Congressman David Scott, W.E.B. Dubois,20
3333 Dr. Louis Sullivan, Actor Omari Hardwick, John Hope, and newly elected State Senator21
3434 RaShaun Kemp; and22
3535 WHEREAS, the 18th Annual "Alpha Day at the Capitol" convenes under the leadership of23
3636 Georgia District Director James Ford II, Assistant District Director Mark Nooks Jr., and24
3737 Political Action Committee Chairman Aaron Johnson, representing 42 chapters across the25
3838 state.26
3939 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that27
4040 the members of this body urge all citizens to recognize and applaud the contributions of28
4141 Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., and the Georgia District in their commitment to making our29
4242 communities a better place as well as recognize February 20, 2025, as Alpha Day at the30
4343 Capitol.31
4444 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized32
4545 and directed to make appropriate copies of this resolution available for distribution to Alpha33
4646 Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., the public, and the press.34
