1616 Commending Mercer University and recognizing February 20, 2025, as Mercer University

1919 WHEREAS, founded in 1833 and moved to Macon in 1871, Mercer University has provided3
2020 192 years of distinguished educational service in Georgia, establishing itself as a dynamic4
2121 and comprehensive center of undergraduate, graduate, and professional education; and5
2222 WHEREAS, Mercer University enrolls more than 9,200 students across 12 schools and6
2323 colleges, offering diverse academic programs in liberal arts and sciences, law, pharmacy,7
2424 medicine, health professions, business, engineering, education, theology, music, nursing, and8
2525 professional advancement while fostering a culture of excellence in teaching, learning,9
2626 research, and service; and10
2727 WHEREAS, the Georgia House Speaker's Chief of Staff Terry England serves as a Mercer11
2828 University Trustee, and numerous Mercer University alumni hold esteemed leadership12
2929 positions in the Georgia House of Representatives; and13

3232 WHEREAS, Mercer University celebrated a record-setting year of student achievement in

3434 2024, with 48 students earning 55 nationally and internationally competitive merit15
3535 scholarships and fellowships; and16
3636 WHEREAS, Mercer University's football team, the Mercer Bears, made history by winning17
3737 the Southern Conference championship in 2024, adding to the university's legacy of athletic18
3838 achievement; and19
3939 WHEREAS, Mercer University's debate team earned national recognition by ranking third20
4040 at the National Parliamentary Debate Association Tournament, and its Phi Beta Kappa21
4141 chapter was honored as an Outstanding Chapter during the 47th Triennial Council in22
4242 Washington, D.C.; and23
4343 WHEREAS, Mercer University's mission, "To teach, to learn, to create, to discover, to24
4444 inspire, to empower, and to serve," is exemplified through its transformative educational25
4545 programs, global initiatives, and significant contributions to the cultural and social fabric of26
4646 Macon, Middle Georgia, and beyond.27
4747 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that28
4848 the members of this body commend Mercer University as well as its administration, faculty,29
4949 staff, trustees, students, and alumni for the important contributions they have made to the30
5050 State of Georgia and recognize February 20, 2025, as Mercer University Day at the state31
5151 capitol.32
5252 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized33
5353 and directed to make an appropriate copy of this resolution available for distribution to34
5454 Mercer University.35
