| 19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Georgia's first charter school law was enacted in 1993, and there are currently3 |

| 20 | 20 | | 96 charter schools operating in communities throughout the state; and4 |

| 21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, charter schools are tuition-free, public schools that have fair and open5 |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | enrollment procedures and serve students and families in all 159 counties in Georgia; and6 |

| 23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, a recent national study of charter school performance conducted by the Center7 |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | for Research on Education Outcomes at Stanford University found that students in charter8 |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | schools outperformed their peers in traditional public schools by an average of 16 additional9 |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | days of learning in reading and six additional days of learning in math; and10 |

| 27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, the members of this body commend the dedicated teachers and leaders serving11 |

| 28 | 28 | | in Georgia's charter schools and celebrate the 65,000 public school students enrolled in12 |
