99 Congratulating Ernestine Hunter; and for other purposes.

1111 WHEREAS, this year, Ernestine Hunter will enjoy the rare distinction of celebrating her2
1212 100th birthday, entering the exclusive club of Georgia's centenarians; and3
1313 WHEREAS, Ernestine Hunter began her remarkable 42 year teaching career in 1942 at just4
1414 17 years old, serving as the only teacher in a one-room schoolhouse that educated children5
1515 aged 5 to 17; and6
1616 WHEREAS, she played a vital role in the education of Black students in Effingham County7
1717 during a time when high school education was largely inaccessible to them as they were8
1818 required to travel to Savannah or Statesboro until the establishment of Springfield Central9
1919 High School and Elementary School in 1956; and10
2020 WHEREAS, Ernestine Hunter demonstrated steadfast dedication to her students, adhering11
2121 to a regimented class schedule that included math, reading, English, spelling, and health12
2222 while also providing needed guidance and discipline; and13

2525 WHEREAS, she taught thousands of students across many schools in Effingham County,

2727 including Union Springs and Clyo, before concluding her distinguished career at Marlow15
2828 Elementary School in 1984; and16
2929 WHEREAS, Ernestine Hunter possesses the vast wisdom which only comes through17
3030 experience and the strength of character which is achieved through overcoming the many18
3131 challenges of life; and19
3232 WHEREAS, she has witnessed a dramatic change in the world over the course of her20
3333 lifetime, and we salute her contribution to its progress by her own hard work, good21
3434 citizenship, and commitment to the youth of this state; and22
3535 WHEREAS, by the example Ernestine Hunter has made of her life, she makes this world a23
3636 better place in which to live, and it is only fitting and proper that she be appropriately24
3737 recognized during this very special and memorable time.25
3838 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that26
3939 the members of this body congratulate Ernestine Hunter upon the remarkable occasion of her27
4040 100th birthday and extend the most sincere best wishes for continued health and happiness.28
4141 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized29
4242 and directed to make an appropriate copy of this resolution available for distribution to30
4343 Ernestine Hunter.31
