1919 WHEREAS, the State of Georgia wants all students to reach their individual potential; and3
2020 WHEREAS, existing research and cognitive science are the backbone for personalized4
2121 learning; and5
2222 WHEREAS, literacy and numeracy are vital skills for academic success, and as research6
2323 shows, executive function is likely associated with reading comprehension through its7
2424 relation with decoding and oral language; and8
2525 WHEREAS, current research provides additional support for the role of executive function9
2626 in reading comprehension as a potentially crucial precursor to skilled reading; and10
2727 WHEREAS, in personalized learning, educators must explicitly teach students the skills of11
2828 executive function as the foundation before any other conditions for personalized learning12
2929 can be effectively pursued; and13

3232 WHEREAS, executive function is an umbrella term for the complex cognitive processes that

3434 serve ongoing goal-directed behaviors; and15
3535 WHEREAS, executive function skills, which are well established in cognitive science, are16
3636 also the foundational cognitive processes needed for the "soft skills," "essential skills," and17
3737 "social emotional skills" students need for 21st century college, career, and community18
3838 success; and19
3939 WHEREAS, the skills of executive function (self-regulation, emotional responsibility, task20
4040 completion, working memory, cognitive flexibility, time management, and reflection) are21
4141 crucial to personalized learning and life-long learning; and22
4242 WHEREAS, explicit teaching of executive function leads to self-awareness,23
4343 self-empowerment, self-esteem, and necessary learning skills to ensure student, school, and24
4444 life success; and25
4545 WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper to draw attention to the profound educational26
4646 impact of executive function on the education and lives of children, adults, and students in27
4747 the State of Georgia.28
4848 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that29
4949 the members of this body recognize March 26, 2025, as Executive Function Day at the state30
5050 capitol during National Brain Awareness Month.31
5151 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized32
5252 and directed to make appropriate copies of this resolution available for distribution to33
5353 members of the State Board of Education, the public, and the press.34
