25 LC 112 3293 House Resolution 860 By: Representatives Martin of the 49 th and Jones of the 47 th A RESOLUTION Honoring the life and memory of Marie Lewis Garrett; and for other purposes. 1 WHEREAS, the State of Georgia mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished citizens2 with the passing of Marie Lewis Garrett on August 10, 2024; and3 WHEREAS, Marie Lewis Garrett was born on October 20, 1953, on Governors Island, New4 York, a beloved daughter of Russell and Maria Lewis; and5 WHEREAS, she was immensely proud of her father's distinguished military service,6 honoring his memory by laying wreaths at Arlington National Cemetery, and she deeply7 cherished her mother's Austrian heritage, maintaining close ties with her European relatives8 and speaking fluent German; and9 WHEREAS, a dedicated public servant, Marie Lewis Garrett earned her undergraduate10 degree from the University of Georgia and received a Master of Science from Georgia State11 University's College of Public and Urban Affairs in 1985; and12 WHEREAS, she began her distinguished public service career with the City of Alpharetta,13 Georgia, where she served from 1982 to 1993 in multiple leadership roles, including Director14 H. R. 860 - 1 - 25 LC 112 3293 of Planning and Community Development from February 1982 to May 1989, Assistant City 15 Administrator from May 1989 to May 1991, and City Administrator for Development from16 May 1991 to March 1993; and17 WHEREAS, she later played a pivotal role in the planning and development of numerous18 municipalities throughout metro Atlanta, serving as the first City Manager of Brookhaven,19 Georgia, from December 2012 to January 2016 and consulting for the cities of Powder20 Springs, Stone Mountain, Roswell, Dunwoody, and Sandy Springs through her firm, Marie21 Garrett Consulting Inc.; and22 WHEREAS, throughout her career, she held key roles such as Special Advisor to the Mayor23 of Canton, Interim City Manager for Johns Creek, Consultant for the City of Milton, and24 Vice President of Development at Harry's Farmers Market Inc., where she handled25 governmental affairs and legislative lobbying at the federal, state, and local levels; and26 WHEREAS, she was united in love and marriage to her husband of 46 years, Steve, and was27 blessed with three remarkable sons, Stephen, Zachary, and Matthew, and three cherished28 grandchildren, Rachael, Grady, and Julia, who knew her affectionately as "Oma."29 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that30 the members of this body join in honoring the life and memory of Marie Lewis Garrett and31 express their deepest and most sincere regret at her passing.32 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized33 and directed to make an appropriate copy of this resolution available for distribution to the34 family of Marie Lewis Garrett.35 H.
