77 To amend Code Section 20-8-5 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to law

99 enforcement powers of school security personnel in each public school system of the state,2
1010 certification, and carrying of firearms or weapons, so as to expand jurisdictional authority3
1111 of certain law enforcement officers to include a specified area surrounding school property;4
1212 to provide for a conforming change; to provide for related matters; to repeal conflicting laws;5
1313 and for other purposes.6
1414 BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA:7
1515 SECTION 1.8
1616 Code Section 20-8-5 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to law enforcement9
1717 powers of school security personnel in each public school system of the state, certification,10
1818 and carrying of firearms or weapons, is amended by revising subsections (a) and (c) as11
1919 follows:12
2020 "(a) In each public
2121 local school system in this state, school security personnel employed13
2222 by the local board of education of a county or an independent board of education of a14
2323 municipality for the various public schools thereof who are certified pursuant to15
2424 subsection (b) of this Code section and who are authorized by the such local board of16

2727 education of that county or the independent board of education of that municipality shall17
2828 have the same law enforcement powers on school property and on public or private18
2929 property within five miles of school property, including the power of arrest, as law19
3030 enforcement officers of that respective the county or municipality in which the local school20
3131 system is located."21
3232 "(c) The provisions of this Code section shall not prohibit a local board of education of a22
3333 county or an independent board of education of a municipality from employing school23
3434 security personnel without law enforcement powers."24
3535 SECTION 2.25
3636 All laws and parts of laws in conflict with this Act are repealed.26
