66 Honoring the life and memory of Alice Mae White Bussey; and for other purposes.

88 WHEREAS, the State of Georgia mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished citizens2
99 with the passing of Alice Mae White Bussey; and3
1010 WHEREAS, Alice Mae White Bussey was born on July 31, 1947, in south DeKalb County,4
1111 Georgia, the tenth of twelve children born to Oscar Curtis White Sr., a skilled carpenter, and5
1212 Eula Belle Shepard White, a devoted homemaker; and6
1313 WHEREAS, after completing her higher education in California, she returned to Georgia and7
1414 served as the state's first Labor Department federal representative, during which time she8
1515 managed millions of dollars, conducted investigations, and developed programs benefiting9
1616 the elderly, welfare recipients, and high school dropouts; and10
1717 WHEREAS, she further served as the Federal Women's Program manager for the eight-state11
1818 Southeastern Region, advocating for policies and programs to support women in the12
1919 workforce; and13

2222 WHEREAS, in 1985, Alice Mae White Bussey made history as the first woman elected

2424 president of the Atlanta Business League, and after her marriage to florist James Bussey, she15
2525 embarked on a distinguished career in the floral industry, becoming the first African16
2626 American FTD florist in Atlanta; and17
2727 WHEREAS, during her more than 30 years in the industry, she grew her own florist shop18
2828 from a local retail establishment into an international enterprise, traveling extensively with19
2929 her husband to develop business markets across the United States, Europe, and Africa; and20
3030 WHEREAS, she and her husband participated in former Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young's21
3131 historic trade mission to Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and Barbados, promoting business22
3232 opportunities and economic development; and23
3333 WHEREAS, in addition to her many wonderful career achievements, she was a devoted24
3434 mother to her three adult children as well as a doting grandmother to her grandchild; and25
3535 WHEREAS, a compassionate and generous woman, Alice Mae White Bussey will long be26
3636 remembered for her love of family, friendship, and community and will be missed by all who27
3737 had the great fortune of knowing her.28
3838 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body29
3939 join in honoring the life and memory of Alice Mae White Bussey and express their deepest30
4040 and most sincere regret at her passing.31
4141 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed32
4242 to make an appropriate copy of this resolution available for distribution to the family of Alice33
4343 Mae White Bussey.34
