66 Expressing support for increased awareness of stomach cancer; and for other purposes.

88 WHEREAS, stomach cancer, known as gastric cancer, is the fifth most common cancer2
99 globally and the fourth leading cause of cancer death worldwide; and3
1010 WHEREAS, stomach cancer, accounts for about 1.5 percent of all new cancers diagnosed4
1111 in the United States each year; and5
1212 WHEREAS, 26,890 new cases of stomach cancer were reported in 2024; and6
1313 WHEREAS, there are disparities in stomach cancer incidence and mortality among racial and7
1414 ethnic groups in the United States; and8
1515 WHEREAS, while there has been a decline in stomach cancer incidence, the lack of9
1616 awareness and focus on risk factors and early detection through screening and surveillance10
1717 may cause individuals at high risk for the disease to dismiss their symptoms; and11
1818 WHEREAS, Georgia ranks 11th in mortality from stomach cancer; and12

2121 WHEREAS, increased advocacy, awareness, research and education may bring improved

2323 outcomes for patients in earlier detection and treatment.14
2424 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body15
2525 express support for increased awareness of stomach cancer and recognize that such16
2626 awareness may lead to earlier detection for patients.17
2727 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed18
2828 to make appropriate copies of this resolution available for distribution to the public and the19
2929 press.20
