25 LC 112 3353 Senate Resolution 383 By: Senators Watson of the 11th, Goodman of the 8th, Echols of the 49th, Williams of the 25th and Anderson of the 24th A RESOLUTION Recognizing March 27, 2025, as City of Thomasville Day at the state capitol; and for other 1 purposes.2 WHEREAS, the City of Thomasville, Georgia, was founded in 1825 as the county seat of3 Thomas County; and4 WHEREAS, the City of Thomasville is named for General Jett Thomas, who distinguished5 himself as a hero of the War of 1812 and is credited with constructing the first building at the6 University of Georgia; and7 WHEREAS, Lieutenant Henry Ossian Flipper, the first Black graduate of the United States8 Military Academy at West Point, was born into slavery in the City of Thomasville; and9 WHEREAS, former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy traveled to the City of Thomasville to10 stay on a local plantation after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963; and11 WHEREAS, General Lloyd Austin, former United States Secretary of Defense, is a12 Thomasville native; and13 S. R. 383 - 1 - 25 LC 112 3353 WHEREAS, the City of Thomasville was known as one of the leading winter resort locations 14 for many of the nation's prominent families in finance, industry, and politics; and15 WHEREAS, the City of Thomasville remains a destination of choice for people from across16 the nation and around the world who seek world-class hospitality, hunting and fishing,17 dining, shopping, and cultural experiences; and18 WHEREAS, the City of Thomasville is known as "The Rose City" and hosts the annual Rose19 Festival.20 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body21 recognize March 27, 2025, as City of Thomasville Day at the state capitol.22 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed23 to make appropriate copies of this resolution available for distribution to the public and the24 press.25 S.
